“Okay. It appears there was a mix-up with the housing allocations. Levi—you were supposed to be here, and Noah, you were supposed to be next door. There’s nothing we can do about it now, not without causing a massive fucking headache for the housing team. All the paperwork has been filed.” He sighed, rubbing his hand across his face, and then turned to Noah. “Look, I know this isn’t an ideal situation. But I think I speak for us all when I say this—if you’re happy to stay, we’re more than happy to have you. You seem like a good guy. I can’t promise we won’t talk about football, but we’ll do our best to keep it to a minimum around you.” He gave Noah a genuine smile, and the stiffness went out of Noah’s shoulders. A small, hesitant smile curved over his lips, directed at Travis, and something inside me twisted.

He straightened up, some of the apprehension leaving his gaze. “Thanks. You’re right—it’s not an ideal situation for any of us. I—you were out of the room when I told the others that I’d had some issues with football players in the past, and I guess it’s made me a bit…y’know.” He shrugged, his mouth twisting. “But you guys have been nothing but welcoming to me.” Right after he’d said those words, he shot me a sideways glance, and I heard his unspokenexcept you. “I’ll try my hardest to be a decent housemate.”

Unlikely.

Travis nodded. “We’ve known our fair share of asshole players too, but I promise that none of us here are like that.” He glanced over at me with a smirk. “That includes Liam. He’s just a grumpy bastard at the moment.”

I glared at him, but he’d already turned back to Noah. “Now that’s all been said, let me officially welcome you to number 3, housemate.”

They grinned at each other.

This couldn’t be happening.

“How the fuck can this be happening?”

“Seriously, Liam, what’s your problem? You’re really starting to piss me off now.” Travis shot me a warning look.

Oh. I said that aloud. And fuck Travis. He might be the oldest person here, but he had no right to act like he was in charge of us.

Except, yeah…he was our team captain. I probably shouldn’t piss him off too much, otherwise he’d bench me just to make a point. “Alright. Sorry, okay? I’m…fuck, I don’t know. Tired and shit.”

He raised his brows, nodding in the direction of Noah. “It’s not just me you should be apologising to.”

“Fine. I apologise to anyone I might have annoyed or offended or whatever. Happy?”

“No, but it’ll have to do. I don’t have time for this. Come on, we’re gonna be late if we don’t get a move on.” He began herding us out of the door, stopping to speak in Noah’s ear, too low for me to catch. Noah gave him another small smile, then leaned back against the countertop with his arms folded across his chest. For someone that allegedly had an aversion to sports, he seemed to be very fucking well defined. I straightened my shoulders, flexing my muscles deliberately as I crossed the room, and he snorted, amused.

“See you later, housemate.” A wide, fake smile appeared on his face, showing his straight, white teeth in all their glory.

“Fuck you.” I flipped him the finger, and he returned the gesture, his fake smile morphing into a genuine grin.

Wanker.
