I shook off the unexpected spike of…whatever it was. Probably irritation that he’d run out like a coward instead of answering back. Deliberately facing the opposite way to the exit, I scanned the crowd for my friends. Ander was still over by the fruit machines, watching Elliot’s attempt at winning the jackpot, so I wandered over to join him.

“Alright, mate.” I greeted him with a nod, which he returned. “Tell me you got economics on Monday mornings too.”

He rolled his eyes. “Yeah. First thing on a Monday morning? Whoever does the timetables is a sadist.”

“Yep. Total sadist.” We both laughed. Then, changing the subject, I indicated my head towards the pool table, which was now free. “Wanna play?”

“Depends. Are you prepared to have your ass kicked by the pool king?”

“You wish, mate.” I shook my head at him with a grin. “Get ready to lose.”

We ended up playing three games before I was distracted by the sight of a pretty girl standing at the bar, close to Travis, who was buying a pint. Long, dark brown hair and a tight, sexy ass. Just my type. I said a general goodbye to the table, nodding in the girl’s direction, and Ander gave me a discreet thumbs up. We had a routine by now, after a year of being friends, with the same goal in mind. He was my wingman, and I was his. He leaned over to me, speaking in a low murmur. “Good luck, mate. She’s fit as fuck. Send her blonde friend my way.”

I caught Travis’ eye as I glanced at the girl’s friend, and he shook his head at me with a smirk. He seemed to find the way Ander and I hooked up with different girls every time amusing, for some reason. Just because he was loved-up with his girlfriend and none of the girls I pulled held my interest, didn’t mean that anything was missing. He kept telling us that when we found “the one” we’d feel differently, but one: I couldn’t imagine that happening, and two: I wasn’t interested in it happening. My uni days were about having a good time, getting my degree, and playing football—not necessarily in that order.

“I’m on it.” I clapped Ander on the back and headed over to the girl.
