“I like your style, mija. You’ve got strength. And heart.” He picked out a cigar from a box, cut off the tip, and lit it. He took a slow drag and exhaled. “I appreciate your work and loyalty. I look forward to the work you will do for me. Now, you should rest. Eat something and rest. Tomorrow is a big day for us.”

“I’ll take her back,” Guadalupe said. I was so thankful. This would give us a chance to talk.

We were immediately disappointed as Alonso López shook his head. “No, you stay,Princesa. We have to celebrate tonight. Go get ready. There’s a gift waiting for you in your room.” He gave her a smile and a wink. But she did as he bid, fearful of additional punishments.

He stood and nodded to me then. “And you too. Make sure to get some rest. I’ll have dinner sent to your room. Rafa will take you there.”

López left, going to wherever he was slinking off to. His loyal henchmen followed. Now it was just Rafa and me. And I didn’t like the look in his eyes.

Feeling a sense of relief, my body sagged deeper into the chair I was sitting in. My eyes were heavy. My head was foggy. I was hungry and tired. Nothing sounded better than food and sleep right now.

I felt Rafa’s threatening presence from behind. Then everything went black.
