Pearson laughed. “Total dick move.”

“Hey, I didn’t do it on purpose. I was trying to be nice.”

“How’d that go over for you?” Pearson asked.

“I got the sidewaysfuck youlook for at least two weeks. Sucked.”

We stopped our laughing before opening Captain Gomez’s door. No way were we going to get reamed any more than we had to.

We emerged from Captain Gomez’s office fifteen minutes later. He’d had his ass handed to him, and now, so had we.

“We have to get this handled. We can’t screw this up. You guys need to hit the streets like Captain said and get us some legit intel.”

“Copy that,” Pearson said.

“You two take this list,” I said, handing a sheet over to Lockett and Pearson. “Davis and I’ll take these.”

“A please would be nice,” Lockett said.

“It would, wouldn’t it,” I said, shoving a file folder playfully into his chest.

“Atkins, you’ve been a little wound up lately. Maybe you need something stronger than coffee,” Davis said, pushing my mug with the eraser tip of his pencil. He snorted a little laugh.

“Maybe a massage. My wife says a good massage always sets her back to rights,” Lockett said.

“Let your hair down. Get drunk and sing some karaoke,” Pearson suggested.

I shook my head. “No more drunken nights for”—I looked at my watch—“at least the next forty-eight hours.” I didn’t want a repeat performance of last night. Not to mention I had back-to-back shifts the next couple of days.

“Maybe you need to take a page outta Chad’s playbook.”

“Yeah. Get some hot lovin’ from a hot young stud.”

“I have plenty of sex, thank you very much.” I gave Chad a smug look. He knew all about last night. He was like one of my girlfriends, and he knew almost everything about me. When you’ve been partners as long as Chad and I had been, if you’re lucky, they become a friend. They become family. And Chad Davis was like my crazy little brother. He had my back—at work and when it came to my personal life.

“Okay. Then you need some good sex,” he said with a perky pout to his lips. He wasn’t wrong. I hadn’t had a good and proper romp in the sack that left me breathless and stupid in a long, longtime.
