“You do?”

“Mmm-hmm,” she linked her leg over mine and cradled me to her.

“Why?”

“Because,” she took a breath, “It makes you who you are, Tyler. Bee doesn’t define you. She . . . He. I’ve never asked. Is Bee a boy or a girl?”

“Well, traditionally, as a Transformer, Bee is a boy. I have always thought of Bee as a girl though. I don’t know why. But now that you bring it up, I feel like it’s weird for me to think that way.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s written in the script. And because girls’ names are reserved for cars. And isn’t it weird for me to have a girl name for something that’s part of me? Part of a man?”

“That’s sexist!”

“No, I don’t mean it that way, but it’s kinda like having a woman’s name tattooed on me. Like if I had my ex’s name on me somewhere, wouldn’t that be weird for you?”

“I don’t know. Maybe. I guess I wouldn’t like it. But if it’s a part of who you are and what you’ve been through, I suppose I would have to try and accept that.”

“Nah. I’d get it covered. It would be weird, even if you could accept it. I wouldn’t want the reminder. But Bee, nothin’ I can do about that.”

“So, boy or girl?” she asked, bringing us back to the original question.

I thought for a moment, then decided it didn’t matter—boy or girl. In the end, Bee was a part of me, and I was a part of Bee. Ying and yang. “You decide,” I told her.

“Well, like I said, Bee doesn’t define you.Shemay have transformed your body, but she doesn’t take away from what a wonderful, truly remarkablemanyou are.”

I noticed her emphasis on “man.”

“I hope you know how amazing you are, Tyler. You’re one of a kind. And you’re definitelymore than meets the eye.”

I chuckled at her use of the famous slogan. “I am definitely happier now than I have been in a long time.”

She sighed against me and squeezed me in a hug. As we drifted off to sleep again, I reflected on my happiness. The truth was, I was happier. When I said those words to her, I meant with her being in my life. I didn’t have the balls to say it yet. I just hoped she subconsciously knew it.
