“Your name came up for an undercover assignment, Atkins,” Captain Fernando Gomez told me when I took a seat at his desk. The door was closed. It was just him and me.

“Why me?”

“You were requested. Specifically.”

“By who?” I asked. My intuition told me I already knew the answer, and this was precisely why I’d been called in early. Because Captain Gomez knew shit was gonna hit the fan.

He evaded the question, expertly jumping to the one thing that would make it impossible for me to resist. “There’s an opportunity to take down Alonso López andLos Tiburónes.”

One eyebrow lifted involuntarily on my forehead. Still, I refused the bait.

“New intel, new leads. It’s promising.Verypromising.”

“I’ve heard the same thing before. Several times, Captain. What makes you so sure this time’s any different?”

“There’s a CI. Name is Guadalupe Garcia. Goes by Lupe. And she’s already in withLos Tiburónes.”

“And what’s my part?”

His head swiveled. For me, it all happened in slow motion. A two-rap knock.

The air shifted with the opening of the door. And my world turned upside down.

There stood Dumbfuck Detective Adam Mitchell. My arch-nemesis. The thorn in my side. The asshole who I knew suspected my former partner of going rogue and being in cahoots with the cartel.

“You’ve gotta be kidding me,” I said under my breath. But I knew he heard it.

“Atkins,” Mitchell greeted me.

I looked at him, like seeing straight through him. Like he didn’t even exist. I turned my eyes back to my captain.

“I gather from the warm greeting, you’ve been briefed.”

“More or less.” I picked at my fingernail like I was bored.

Mitchell began his story. What he said sounded like he had gotten further than anyone had in the previous years. My ears perked up when he said, “My CI, one of ’em anyway, he took himself out.”

“If he was working with you, I can see why he chose to off himself.” My words were screwed up, but I didn’t care. Adam Mitchell was seriously such an asshole.

Mitchell ignored my dig, deciding getting into a pissing match with me wasn’t worth his time. He was seriously such an asshole. “Couldn’t live with what he’d done. Couldn’t see how he’d be able to get over everything he’d done. And more than anything, he was scared shitless that they’d get to him one way or another.”

“So, how does this Guadalupe play into this?” I asked.

“She’s another CI. Was working in tandem with him. And she was able to take the credit for his death. Acted like she’d discovered his dirty little secret and turned everything over to Alonso López. It was a way to cover her ass while simultaneously solidifying her cred with him.”

“Okay.”

“She has a contact, Ramona Perez, a former associate of her father’s, who is asking to get back in the game.

“And they’re not suspicious?”

“She doesn’t think so. They asked to meet with Ramona, and Lupe has something in the works. Guess she got snatched up years ago, went away, did some time. She’s been out for a little over a year. But she’s in trouble and needs something stable to get out of whatever hole she dug herself into.”

I looked from Mitchell to Captain Gomez.

“Lupe is waiting for official word from López to bring her in.”
