Interview in Falmouth in an hour. Wish me luck

She knew Georgie had begun the search for a teaching job in the area, and Elizabeth immediately called her. “Hey, I didn't know you had an interview today! That was quick.”

“Ugh, I'm so nervous! I haven't done the interview thing in a while.”

“I’m sure you’ll be great. Have you told Will?”

“No. Not because I don't want him to know, but I’d just…I’d rather be able to tell him I already have a job.” Georgiana paused. “Can I tell you something?”

“Sure.”

“You have to promise not to tell Will.”

“Oh. Um, okay. It’s nothing horrible, is it?”

“Of course not. I'm going to move out.”

Elizabeth's eyebrows rose. “Where are you going?”

“Not too far. Just to the guesthouse. I mean, I know it's not a huge show of independence, but I think it will be good for me, and for him too. I can't live with him forever. He needs more privacy, and so do I. I want to have my own space.”

“Are you doing this because of me? I mean, because of him and me?”

“Partially, yes.”

“Georgie, we have plenty of privacy. You don't need to move out.”

“I do, and it's agoodthing. Will is thirty-one years old, and he needs his own space. I'm happy for him, happy he has you, and I want this for both of us.”

“Am I going to have to keep this a secret for long?”

“No, I'll talk to him soon. And I'll call you later to let you know how the interview goes.”

“Okay. Good luck! Talk to you soon.”

* * *

Will parkedhis car at the ballfield and climbed out. He still wore his suit, so he pulled off his jacket and tie and tossed them into the car. When he spotted Elizabeth, he smiled and waved, and then headed toward the field. It was warm, and he undid the top buttons on his shirt and rolled up his shirtsleeves.

Her eyes never left his, and she was obviously unaware that the rest of her team had gone back onto the field, and were patiently waiting for her to make her way to the pitcher’s mound. He subtly gestured toward the field and grinned when one of her teammates called out, asking if she was planning on continuing the game. She flushed a bright pink, but grabbed her glove and ran to the pitcher's mound.

While he watched the game, he mentally checked the list of things he needed to do for her birthday tomorrow, and felt a flash of uncertainty; he hadn't actuallyboughther a birthday gift. But he was taking her to the Vineyard, and hedidhave other things planned… He only hoped it was enough.

He’d turned away from the field and was looking toward Vineyard Sound when a pair of tanned arms snaked around his waist and a kiss was pressed to his back. He turned around, happy to see his girl smiling up at him.

She wrapped her arms around his shoulders and pressed her lips to his, forgoing a verbal greeting. Her hands traveled down from his shoulders, and paused when they reached his bare forearms, below the rolled-up cuffs of his shirt.

He watched with amusement as she studied his arms and hands before turning her eyes up to his. He was surprised to see they held that beautiful, deep shade of green, and he quirked an eyebrow.

“Hi. What's up?”

She glanced toward the field, and then back to him. “Nothing, I'm just…happy to see you.”

Her cheeks pinked, and he narrowed his eyes. “What's going on with you?”

“Nothing! You were just–you were distracting me… Taking off your jacket and tie, rolling up your sleeves...” She paused to caress his forearms and play with the hair there. “I didn't even notice my team had gone out to the field, and I stood there like an idiot.”

He laughed, and even though she tried to bite back a smile, she wasn’t quite successful.
