He did as she asked, and they sat with the tray between them. He’d brought up a bowl piled high with fresh strawberries and blueberries, a carafe full of coffee, a couple of warm scones, and some fresh whipped cream for the fruit.

"You're spoiling me," she said.

He dipped a strawberry into the cream and lifted it to her lips. "Everyone should get spoiled on their birthday. Open up."

She bit into the strawberry and groaned. "Mm, that's wonderful. Aren't you having any?"

His eyebrows rose. "Hm?"

Eating suddenly became the last thing on his mind, as the enormity of the moment caught up to him.God, she looks good in my shirt. He watched as she popped a couple of plump blueberries into her mouth, her eyes widening with pleasure as she chewed and swallowed.

"You should try them, they're delicious. Perfectly ripe."

He leaned over the tray, held the back of her head, and kissed her deeply, tasting the fruit she’d just eaten. "You're right. Delicious.” He smiled wickedly and kissed her again. “Very sweet."

She glanced at the tray, her eyes zeroing in on the whipped cream, then looked at him with a devilish gleam in her eye. She quickly dipped her fingers into the bowl, lifted a huge dollop of the cream, and dropped it on his thigh, just below the edge of his shorts.

She smiled coyly. "Oops."

He looked at his leg and then looked at her, and knew instantly that he was in trouble. “Are you going to clean that off?”

She shrugged, but her tongue ran along her bottom lip, and his stomach flipped in delighted anticipation.

This is going to get messy.

"Why amI going with Georgiana again? You have to remind me.”

After finally rising earlier, they’d washed the stickiness of the whipped cream from their bodies with a shared shower, and finally ventured downstairs. Georgiana had left a note saying she was out at the guesthouse poking around, and Elizabeth was relieved. She was a little embarrassed that it was nearly noon, and they were just emerging from Will’s room.

Oh well. It’s my birthday, and that was the best damn start to any birthday I’ve ever had.

After spending most of the afternoon lounging on the beach, they both felt like a power nap was in order, although neither slept. Instead, they talked quietly and kissed alot, letting that luscious tension build, savoring it and feeding it, but not acting on it. Now it was nearing four o’clock, and they were still curled together on his bed.

"She wants to take you out for a birthday drink, that's why. You've become a good friend to her." He kissed her nose. "I'll meet you back at your place."

She sighed. "All right. I'm going to take another quick shower, if that's okay. It'll help me wake up a bit."

"Go right ahead."

Her phone rang, and she rose to retrieve it from his dresser. It was Jane, calling to wish her a happy birthday. They spoke for a few minutes, but the minute she set her phone down, it rang again. This time it was Lydia, calling for the same reason. She’d already received calls from her parents, her aunt, and Charlotte; they’d all left messages for her this morning, but she’d been too preoccupied with whipped cream and Will to answer the phone.

After showering and donning her favorite blue sundress, she walked downstairs to find Georgie and Will deep in conversation, which immediately stopped when she walked into the room. Will turned to her and gave a low whistle.

"You are gorgeous, birthday girl," he murmured, and kissed her neck.

"Thank you."

"Okay, you have plenty of time for that later," Georgiana teased. "C'mon, Lizzy, I'll return you to him in a little while. You'll survive."

Elizabeth playfully rolled her eyes and gave Will a kiss. "I'll see you in a bit."

"Have fun."

She nodded, then paused. "I just…I want to tell you that this has been a wonderful day. Thank you."

He stroked her cheek. "You're welcome. Thank you for sharing it with me."
