“I'm not defending their actions and their choices. But what you just said…that’s a very bigwhat if. I saw you talking to her last night. What are your impressions?”

He shrugged. “She’s nice.”

“I watched her with Richard, and it’s obvious she’s in love with him. They were completely wrapped up in each other. She was even comfortable with Anne and Catherine, and that’s not an easy feat. The only person she didn't seem comfortable with was you.”

He turned to her. “I tried to relax and be approachable, I really did.”

“I know. But I’m sure she knows how you feel about her—or about them, I guess.”

“She does.”

“I think she wouldn’t have been so nervous around you if she was only after Richard’s money. The way she looked at him… She’s a woman in love who wants the acceptance of her love's family. Of you.”

He stared out at the ocean and sighed. “I messed up. Badly.”

She toyed with the soft waves of his hair that curled behind his ear. “You said you had a good talk with Richard, but I think another one probably wouldn’t hurt. I'm sure he's been dwelling on it all day as well. You should call him. Soon.”

He nodded. “We have to talk about the LA contracts anyway.”

“So tell him how you feel. It can’t hurt.”

“I still feel awful that you heard me say all those things… I don't even know where all of that came from. But once I started, I couldn’t stop.”

“Youdoknow where it came from. You’re beginning to figure it out. And I won't lie—you scared me. But you said you didn't mean it.” She stared into his eyes. “You said you didn't, and I believe you.”

He kissed her gently. “Thank you.”
