Elizabeth stared at the nurse in confusion. “Are you sure he left? He didn't just go to park the car or something?”

The nurse shrugged. “No. He left.”

“And he was tall, dark hair, nice-looking?”

The nurse smiled. “I'm pretty sure we're talking about the same person. He wanted me to make sure you got the bag, but there was no message.”

Elizabeth frowned. She didn't have her cell phone; it was in the other bag he’d taken with him, and so she had no way of calling him. “Do you have a phone I could use?”

“Once you're in the other unit, you'll have your own phone. You'll be moved soon.”

Elizabeth sighed. What could have happened that he wouldn't come in here and tell her himself? Her thoughts ran wild, and by the time they moved her to the other unit half an hour later, her head was throbbing.

The nurse looked at her with concern. “Are you feeling okay, honey? You’re awfully pale. Do you need something for pain?”

“No, I just–I just need a phone.”

Finally, the nurse gave her a phone, but when she dialed Will's number, it went straight to voice mail.

“Will, it's me. Where are you? Did something happen? I don’t–I don’t have my phone, but you can call the hospital…” She paused to ask the nurse for the number, and repeated it into the phone. “Please call me.”

She hung up and looked at the clock, trying to remember what time he’d left. It had to have been at least an hour ago, if not longer. She wished she could remember Georgiana's number, but it was stored in her phone and she hadn’t memorized it. She picked up the phone again and called Jane.

“Elizabeth! Are you okay? Georgie called and said you were hurt at softball and had to go to the hospital.”

“I have a concussion, so they're keeping me overnight. Georgie called you?”

“Yes, Will asked her to. He told her he was on his way to your house to pick up some things for you.”

Elizabeth rubbed her forehead. “Does Charles have Georgie's number? I need to call her, but I don’t have my cell. I don't know where Will is.”

“What do you mean?”

“He dropped off my things, but then he just left. I tried to call him, but he didn't answer. ”

“Maybe there was an emergency.”

“But why wouldn't he come in to tell me himself? Why would he just leave?”

“Don’t worry, we'll find out what's going on. You need to rest. Do you want me to come to the Cape tomorrow morning? We were planning on driving down after work, but I can call in sick and come earlier.”

“No, I don't want you to do that. I'll be fine. I just…I wish I knew what was going on.”

“I'm sure Georgie knows what's up. And I'll have Charles try to reach Will, okay? ”

“Okay.”

Elizabeth asked the nurse for a paper and pen to write down Georgiana's number, then gave Jane the number for the hospital before saying goodbye. Once again she dialed Will's cell, and when he didn’t pick up, her stomach churned.

Something is wrong.

She called Georgiana, who answered immediately.

“How are you feeling? Will told me what happened.”

“I’m okay. When did you talk to him?”
