“Aha, you're right.NotElizabeth. Can't lump her in with them. No, Elizabeth just wanted me for me. I finally figured that out. I figured out that I fucked up royally, but you know what? It was about eleven days too late.”

“Do you really think so?”

“I know so. She told me, right to my face. She won't take me back, won't take that chance. Can you blame her?” He lifted the bottle and drained the remainder of its contents.

“So is this what you're going to do now? Sit around and drink?”

“Well, it's all I've got on my–on my schedule at the moment. Tonight, I'm drinking.” He glanced at the empty bottle. “Well, Iwasdrinking. I guess I'm done.”

“Good. Can I say something?”

“Sure. Let me have it.”

She took a deep breath. “You’re pathetic. I never thought I'd ever have a reason to say that to you, but you are.”

He nodded.

“Do you want Elizabeth in your life? Do you really want her back?”

“Of course I do. How–how can you even ask me that?”

“Because you have a strange way of showing it. Instead of sitting here, feeling sorry for yourself and drinking yourself into a stupor, you should be figuring out how to win her back.”

His expression grew serious, and for a moment, he felt completely sober. “It's not going to happen, Georgie. She's done. I blew it. I don't deserve her... I know it, andsheknows it. I've lost her.”

“You love her, and she loves you. I know she does.”

He smiled sadly. “She said she does. But she said it's not enough.”

“Ofcourseit's not enough. If you want her back, you're going to have to work on whatever it is that made you run away from her.”

“But how? I know–I know I would never do it again, I know I wouldn't. But how do I prove it? There's no way. I don't know how.”

“I don't know how either, but I do know that this”—she gestured toward the bottle—“isn't doing you any good. You're too smart for that, Will. Don't create a whole new set of problems.”

“I won't, Georgie. Don't worry. Tonight I just–I just needed to be numb. I wanted to forget.”

“It's not working though, is it? The booze only makes it worse. Everything will be the same tomorrow, only you'll also be dealing with a hangover.”

“I know, I know. No lectures. I'm–I’m done, okay?”

“Okay. No more lectures from me, no more whiskey for you. Do you want some dinner?”

He grimaced and rubbed his stomach. “Um...no.”

He stood from the chair and wobbled precariously, and Georgie jumped up to help him.

“Pleasego inside so you don't fall off the deck,” she muttered.

He grinned. “That would suck.” They walked into his bedroom, and he glanced at the big, empty bed. “I think I'm just going to–to lie down. I haven't slept. I need to sleep.”

She closed and locked the French doors. “That's probably a good idea. I'll lock up the house on my way out.”

“Thanks for coming over.”

She wrapped her arms around him and he hugged her tightly, clinging to her for a long moment and almost losing his composure before stepping away.

“Call me if you need anything,” she said.
