She thought for a moment.Don’t back down now. “Tomorrow? Before I go home?”

“Sure.”

“Okay. Um, I’m staying at Jane’s.”

He grinned slightly. “I figured.”

She stared into his eyes, and was both calmed and unnerved by his cool, collected demeanor. “I guess I should go back downstairs.”

He nodded and gestured for her to walk ahead of him. “After you.”

It was close to midnight before the party wound down. The remaining guests—Charles, Jane, Elizabeth, and Matt—sat in the living room, making small talk until Charles suggested it was time to head out, as he had to drop Elizabeth and Jane off at Jane's apartment before heading home himself.

Georgiana hugged each of them and thanked them for coming, and she and Matt remained in the living room while everyone else went into the foyer. Jane and Charles said good night to Will, and Jane tugged on Charles's arm and told Elizabeth they would wait for her outside, leaving Elizabeth and Will alone.

They stared at each other, both unsure of how to say goodnight.

“This feels strange,” he finally said.

She nodded. “It does. Why do you think that is?”

“Because we’re here, together…but we’re not.”

He moved closer and reached for her hand, threading his fingers through hers, and though her first instinct was to pull away, she didn’t.

“Can I–is it all right if I hug you?” he asked.

She nodded. “I would like that.”

He wrapped her in his arms, embracing her tightly but all too briefly, and she nearly burst into tears. It feels like home. She felt bereft when he stepped away, but schooled her expression, determined to keep herself together.

“I'll call you in the morning.” He opened the door and saw that Charles was double-parked. “Your chariot awaits.”

She grinned. “Good night, Will.”

“Good night, Elizabeth.”
