She smiled. “I should have known.”

“I've heard these are the best in Boston.”

As they ate, they made small talk. It was a bit strained at first, but soon they relaxed and were able to talk easily. They finished eating, and he sat back against the trunk of the willow tree and held out his hand. She took hold of it and moved toward him, and he opened his legs, allowing space for her to sit between them. When she leaned back against his chest, he took a deep breath and wrapped his arms around her waist. She rested her arms over his, and he heard her sigh.

“Is this okay? Are you comfortable?” he asked.

She turned to look up at him. “Yes. I miss touching you, having that connection with you. I just think we need to go slow.”

He smiled and kissed her nose, and she leaned back again, relaxing into him.

“Um, just…how slow are we going?” he asked after a moment.

Her mouth dropped open, and she turned to look at him. “Really?”

“I don't mean withthat. I just…I would like to take you on a date.”

“Oh. When?”

He shrugged. “Soon. This weekend, maybe Saturday night? I could come to the Cape. I have a house there, you know.”

She chuckled and traced her fingers over the backs of his hands. “I think I might like to go on a date with you.”

He laughed softly. “Will you let me know when you know for sure?”

She shook her head and grinned. “Mm…no. I won't make you wait.”

“So…?”

Her eyes met his. “It's a date.”
