He nodded. “I'm sorry I'm being so selfish. You're the one who has to deal with Collins; I should be the one takingyourmind off everything, not the other way around.”

“This wasn’t just for you. I feel better too. So now we can go to the police station and finish this business, then we'll stop at my house, and then we can go home and have a nice, quiet night.”

He smiled widely and kissed her. “That sounds good. A quiet night at home.”

They leftthe police station with copies of the reports and got into their vehicles to head to Elizabeth's house. Elizabeth drove ahead of Will, and as they neared her house just a few minutes after leaving the station, she slowed and came to a stop when she saw the blue car in her driveway.Oh no.

Will’s Porsche pulled up alongside of her. “That’s his car, isn’t it?” he asked through the passenger window.

She nodded, and when he pulled in behind Bill’s car, blocking it in, she parked behind him.

He climbed from his car and turned to look at her, his eyes flashing. “Stay there.”

He jogged up the stairs, out of her sight. Her heart pounded nervously, and for all of five seconds, she tried to stay where she was…but she couldn't sit, she had to know what was happening.

She could hear them before she saw them; Will's voice, angry and forceful, and Bill's, fearful and stuttering. She flew up the stairs and saw that Will had pinned Bill to the railing, and was just a solid push away from pitching him over the side—a good fifteen-foot drop onto the sand below. There were flowers strewn all over the deck, and a glass vase lay on its side, spilling water.

“Itoldyou to stay away from her,” Will growled, his face flushed. “Did I not speak clearly enough?”

“Will,stop,” she said firmly.

Bill fought back frantically. “Listen to her, listen to Elizabeth!” His arms and legs pushed uselessly against Will as he tried to break loose. “Stop! I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'll never–I'll never bother her again. Please!”

It was obvious Bill was frightened, and she really couldn't blame him; Will’s fury was directed at one target: him.

“Will, pleaseput him down,” she said, louder this time. He turned to her, as if he’d just realized she was there. “Let him go.”

After one more shove, nearly toppling Bill over the railing, Will released him. Bill tried to regain his footing, but he slumped against the railing, clinging to it.

“What the hell iswrongwith you?” Bill yelled. “I only want to talk to her and apologize! She doesn't need protection fromme, she needs protection from the likes ofyou, you goddamned brute!”

Despite Bill’s rantings, Will kept his eyes focused on Elizabeth and ignored Bill…until Bill made two very big mistakes. The first was his final statement, spewed in anger.

“You know what? My cousin was right, your sister wasaskingfor it!”

His second mistake sealed his fate. He swung a meaty fist at Will, barely connecting with the side of his jaw. It was a poorly thrown, weak sucker punch at best, and resulted in Will hardly losing his footing.

Her eyes widened when Will spun and lunged at Bill, throwing all of his weight against him, and her breath caught as she watched the inevitable happen; they hit the railing with such force, they went splintering through it. She heard the resoundingoomphof their bodies hitting the sand, and heard Bill cry out in pain. As she ran down the stairs, she heard the sickeningthwackof a fist, and knew exactly what was happening before she laid eyes on them.

When she rounded the corner, she saw Will on top of Bill, straddling his midsection, fist frozen in midair, ready to strike again. He’d already hit him once, and Bill had the widely split lip to prove it. Suddenly Will sprung off him and backed away, stumbling slightly, and then winced and bent to hold his knee. He was breathing heavily, and there were droplets of blood spattered on his shirt. He sat down hard in the sand, clutching his leg, but never took his eyes from Bill.

She dropped down next to Will. “Are you all right? Is it your leg? Your knee?” She didn't even realize she had tears in her eyes until she looked at him, and his face was blurry and distorted.

“Shh, I'm fine. I'm fine,” he soothed breathlessly, and clumsily stroked her face. “Call the police.”

She looked at Bill, still sprawled in the sand amongst pieces of wood, groaning and clutching his lower back.

“My…it's in the Jeep, my phone is in the Jeep,” she said. “I don't want to leave you here.”

He shook his head. “I'm fine, and he's not going anywhere. Go.”

She ran to the Jeep, grabbed her phone with shaking hands, and dialed 911 as she made her way back to Will. By the time she was off the phone and had reached the back of the house again, Bill was sitting up and eyeing Will nervously.

“You're a lunatic!” Bill shouted, blood spraying from his lips. “I'm going to have you arrested.”

She felt an immediate flash of anger and stood over him. “Shut up, Bill. The police are already on the way. If anyone is getting arrested, it's you.”
