“Youfelloff thedeck?” Jane repeated. “I can't believe it.”

“He needed to get his ass kicked,” Charles said. “Speaking strictly from a non-legal point of view, of course.”

Will nodded. “Yeah, I wasn't thinking much about the law. When he made that comment about Georgie and then swung at me, I nailed him. I didn't expect to send us through the railing, believe me.”

“That’s why you’re limping,” Charles said.

“I bruised my leg, but I mostly landed on him. I'm sure he's a lot more banged up than me.”

“What an asshole,” Jane said. “A sick, perverted, slimy asshole.”

Elizabeth couldn’t help it, she laughed. “Tell us how you really feel, Jane.”

“This is no laughing matter, Lizzy! I hope you're going to do something. Can you get an alarm system? Or a dog? Or at least a baseball bat to put by your door?”

“Jane!”

“Okay, maybe not the dog. But you have to be safe! Most of your neighbors are only here for the summer. You’re practically by yourself. If Collins isn't in jail, I'll be worried about you all the time.” Jane’s head swiveled in Will's direction. “Right? Don't you agree?”

Will's eyebrows rose. “Um...yes?”

Jane looked at him as if he’d sprouted a second head. “Um, yes? What kind of answer isthat?”

“Jane,” Elizabeth said quietly, “it won't be a problem. I won't be living there.”

Jane frowned. “What do you mean you won't be—” She glanced at Will again, and then back to Elizabeth. “Where will you be living?”

“Here. I'm moving in tomorrow.”

“With Will?”

Elizabeth laughed. “Yes. He's kind of the main attraction.”

Jane sighed. “Oh, that makes me feelsomuch better.” She turned to Charles. “Lizzy's moving in with Will.”

Charles grinned. “I heard.”

“Well,” Jane said. “I think we need to make a toast to the new roomies.”

“Sounds good to me,” Charles said, then held up a hand when Will started to rise. “You sit, I'll get it.”

“No, I’m good,” Will said. “I need to get up and move around.”

He hobbled into the kitchen to grab glasses and a bottle of wine, and was surprised when Jane came in behind him a moment later. His relationship with her was still strained, and he sometimes felt as though she was keeping a watchful eye on him, waiting for him to mess up again.

“I've got this,” he said. “Did you need something else?”

“Actually, I was hoping to talk to you.”

“About what?”

“About you. And Lizzy.” His eyebrows rose, and she smiled. “Don't look so nervous. I just wanted to tell you I can see how happy she is, and I know how much she loves you.”

“I love her just as much, Jane. She’s everything to me.”

She stared at him, her vivid blue eyes glued to his. “I believe you. I'm happy for you, and I'm glad everything worked out.” She paused. “I know I don't need to tell you this, because you already know it, but I'm going to say it anyway. She's a wonderful, generous, caring woman, and you're lucky to have her. So take good care of her.”

He nodded once. “I will.”
