Her phone rang, and Will’s handsome face lit up the screen.

“There's my girl,” he said when she answered. “Are you home?”

“Yes, I just got here.”

“How was dinner?”

“Um, it was fine. It was–it was good.”

He paused. “Are you sure?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“You don’t sound happy.”

“I've just got a little headache,” she fibbed.

“Did you take something?”

“Not yet. I will, before I go to bed.”

“I'll let you go, then, so you can get some rest. Call me in the morning?”

“Of course.”

“Still miss me?”

She smiled genuinely. “All the time.”

“Me, too. All the time.” He paused. “Are you sure it's just a headache? You sound miserable.”

“Gee, thanks,” she said, and laughed. “I think it was the wine.”

“Get to bed, then. I'll talk to you in the morning.”

“Okay.”

“Bye, Elizabeth. Feel better.”

She sat back in the chair and stared out at the starry sky. Sleep would not come easily tonight, if at all.

* * *

She was right;sleep did not come easily. She’d tossed and turned for most of the night, and finally fell asleep sometime after two. She groggily slapped at her alarm clock when it sounded at six thirty, and after hitting the snooze button three times, she knew she had to get up.

Just before leaving the house, she picked up the phone to call Will, and her stomach jumped. Why do I feel like this?To him, it was just another wake-up call. He had no idea of the thoughts racing through her mind.

His phone rang a few times before it was picked up.

“Hello.”

Elizabeth froze. “Oh, um, I’m–I'm sorry, I must have the wrong number.”

“Who are you looking for?” the sleepy female voice on the other end asked.

“Oh, um...Will?”

“Mm, he’s sleeping.”
