Will pacedin Richard's office and glanced at his watch, as he’d been doing every few minutes.

“Darcy, will you chill out? Sit down.”

Will stopped pacing. “It's almost five. That means it's almost eight at home.”

“Your math skills never cease to amaze. What did Georgie say when you talked to her?”

“That Elizabeth canceled because she didn’t feel well. What’s if it’s something serious?”

“If it was, I’m sure she would call. She probably doesn't want you to worry.”

“But she’s smart enough to know thatnotcalling is going to make me worry just as much.” Will paused. “I need to go home.”

“Look, you can do what you want. You're a grown man. I just think it's ridiculous for you to alter your plans and rush home because you haven't heard from your girlfriend today.”

Will huffed. “When you put it like that, it does sound kind of ridiculous.”

“Exactly. Wait until tomorrow, at least. If we need to reschedule LA, we'll reschedule.”

Will heard the disappointment in Richard's voice. “No, we won't reschedule. I’m leaving it in your hands. You've more than proven yourself, and I trust you. Move ahead with everything, and just keep me informed.”

Richard smiled, clearly pleased. “Thanks.”

Will thought of Richard's assistant, just down the hall at her desk. “Keep your head on straight, all right? No distractions. No problems. Nopotentialproblems.”

Richard nodded. “Point taken.”

“Good.” He slapped Richard’s back. “I’m useless right now. I'm going back to the hotel.”

Two hours later Will was in his suite, staring out the window when his phone rang. He jumped at it, hoping it was Elizabeth, but it was only Richard.

“Hey, Will. Um, we need to talk.”

Will frowned at Richard’s tone. “About what?”

“I was just on the phone with Anne. We were talking about last night, and she mentioned how you kept going on and on about your girlfriend, how it was driving her insane, Elizabeth this, Elizabeth that—”

“Get on with it, Rich.”

“Well…she remembered something.” Richard cleared his throat. “Um, your phone rang bright and early this morning, and she answered it. It was a woman who thought she’d dialed the wrong number.”

Will’s stomach dropped. “Oh, shit.”

“Anne told her you were sleeping.” Richard paused. “I have to ask… Why was Anne in your suite at four thirty this morning?”

Elizabeth’s alarmclock sounded at six thirty Friday morning, and she immediately reached for her phone and called in sick to work. It was immature and selfish and she felt a little guilty, but she couldn’t deal with being in the office today; she needed time to clear her head. She’d hardly used any sick time in her years at the reserve, so they couldn’t accuse her of abusing it.

As she lay there thinking about the day ahead, she knew she would have to talk to Will; she couldn't keep avoiding him. Her eyes welled with tears so she turned off her phone and rolled over, hoping to go back to sleep.

When she woke a couple hours later, she stared outside at the gray, murky day.

Fits my mood perfectly.

She rose and put some coffee on, then decided to take a hot shower outside, hoping it would make her feel better.
