“Later.” He pulled the truck bed cover closed, then slammed the tailgate door shut and hustled me to the passenger side door.

As I climbed up, he stopped me.

“We’re going to figure this out, I promise.”

I nodded and slid into the seat, reaching for my seatbelt as he closed the door.

He rounded the car and hopped in, backing out of the dusty parking lot before he bothered to put on his seatbelt.

The trip to Clay and Rachel’s place was quiet, almost as if neither of us wanted to voice what that drone meant. Not that we even knew.

Escalation?

Messing with me?

Worse?

With shaking fingers, I pulled out my phone and opened the chat software Poe had given me.

“What are you doing?”

“Checking in with Poe.”

“Good.” He tightened his fingers on the steering wheel. “I don’t like being surprised like that.”

“And you think I do?”

“No.” His jaw went stony.

All the fun from earlier in the day dissolved like sugar in water.

Wil: Hey. We had a weird thing happen today.

Poe: Drone perhaps? You’re all over the damn social channels. And the forums.

Wil: Can we call? So Ransom can hear?

Poe: Yep. Incoming.

I found the iPhone charger cord that connected to his dash and plugged in.

Ransom frowned at me.

“Poe is calling.”

His jaw tightened even more.

“You know, if you keep grinding your molars like that, we’ll be at the dentist.”

He gave me a hard stare, but the phone rang in my hand before he could say anything.

I accepted the call. “Hey. We’re in the car.”

“You guys just like to keep me hopping.”

“We’d prefer quiet over this.” Ransom’s voice was tight.

“I was going to contact you, but your girl beat me to it.” Manic typing in the background let us know she was pulling something up. “Okay, check it. That freaking behemoth of a drone was military grade.”
