An Apple For Your Thoughts

The lodge had two main event halls, the Gala and the Honeycrisp, that could be used for weddings or parties as well as a smaller business center for corporate retreat deals. My sister had taken the Gala room for her reception. It was massive and warm with faded wood post and beam details. It wasn’t the typical golden toned wood—instead the Ronsons had gone with a dark walnut that elevated the hall into something a little more special.

White fairy lights had been installed along the beams to brighten up the space. Rachel had chosen to add more lantern-style lights throughout the room, which kept the cabin feel but classed it up.

Clear crystals hung down from the lanterns like diamonds. The tables were already set up in the winding circular pattern Rach had come up with. Fabric-covered gray chairs were tucked in tight until they were turned out with accessories and flowers.

Boxes were stacked in the corner with the tablecloths, dishware, and silverware labeled efficiently. A large pallet was piled high with boxes. A few had already been opened with stuffing exploding out of them.

Rachel rushed by me, skipping into the center of the room. “Isn’t it great? I just gave my final approval on flowers, but we need to set up the urns near the head table and the large one over near the double doors.”

She spun around, the skirt of her dress swinging around her calves. “We’re going to come through those doors.” She pointed to the ones on the far side of the room.

“Oh, right. That’s smart. Right from the chapel.”

“Exactly!” She clasped her hands under her chin. “I wasn’t sure about what we should do for music. Ian tried to convince me and Zoe that he should play wedding singer.”

I laughed. “I’m not sure Clay’s family is ready for Ian rocking out at your wedding.” Ian Kagan was engaged to our cousin Zoe. He was also pretty famous. “Oh, hey, is he coming to the wedding?”

Rach grinned at me. “Want to get him to do a video with you?”

I lifted my shoulder. “I wouldn’t be opposed to it.”

She linked her fingers with mine and dragged me over to the boxes. “Don’t give him an in, or he’ll never leave you alone.”

“No?”

Rach shook her head. “Ian is like an exuberant puppy. He finds everything exciting. Zoe keeps trying to lose him in the orchard so she can get some painting done.”

“Okay, now I need to see that one.”

“Beckett is always rescuing him in the McIntosh orchard. You’d think he would catch on to her plans. Oh, and now Ian wants to learn how to ride a horse.”

“The orchard is not ready for that.”

Along with being a honest-to-God rockstar, Ian was insanely gorgeous, especially when he grew out his mane of dark curls. That kind of action on a horse would bring the ladies—and some men—to Happy Acres in droves.

Zoe would need an armed guard just to protect her husband.

Judging from how adorable their baby Elvis was, the same would go for her son one day too. The Elvis moniker wouldn’t hurt if he decided to become a singer like his dad.

“No kidding.” Rachel lifted out a beautiful marble planter. “We’re going to have these on the floor beside the table at the doors.”

“Man, you went with the rustic classy.” I touched the cool surface. “That’s gorgeous.”

“Clay kept urging me to go bigger. Stupid man.”

I laughed. “He loves you.”

Her face softened. “Yeah, he does. Big love. More than I was ever expecting in my life.”

I rubbed her arm. “You deserve it.”

“I’m learning to believe that.” She handed me the planter and dug out the other one. “Where did your bodyguard go?”

I jolted. “What?”
