I slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her back against me. Immediately, my body responded to her—and I didn’t make any attempt to hide the fact.

She didn’t try to wiggle away. Instead she leaned back against me and covered my arm with her hand. “That’s just sex.”

I nuzzled my nose along her neck. “Sex isn’t what we have.”

“Don’t do this.” Her voice was hardly more than a whisper.

I stopped. “Do what?”

“Don’t make me love you if you don’t mean it, Ransom.”

I wasn’t sure what to say to that. She was right. It was cruel to play with her emotions if I didn’t intend on going all in.

All of this had happened so fast. But the idea of not having her around just made me hold on tighter.

“We’re just beginning, Chaos.”

Slowly, she turned in my arms. Her scent of lemons filled my head, making me dizzy. Her hazel eyes were wary, but she didn’t back away.

Thank God.

I cupped her face and tipped it up to brush my lips over hers. Not the full on drag her to bed kind of kiss, but a softer one letting her know I wasn’t going anywhere. And damn if that wasn’t the actual truth.

“Let’s get this stuff put away and we can collapse for a few hours.”

She nodded. “Okay. I still need to get my stuff tomorrow.”

“Tomorrow.”

“Promise?”

I kissed her forehead. “I promise.”

It only took a few minutes for us to finish up. I locked up and ushered her inside. I checked the front and found Midnight flopped on the porch. I dumped food in his bowl, but the big dog pushed me aside to go inside.

Chaos dropped to her knees and took all the affection Midnight would happily provide.

Evidently, we had a dog now too.

And we also now were awe. There was no denying that, either.

I brought both his dishes in and set them at the end of the kitchen island. Midnight happily went over to wolf down his kibble and slobbered water all over my floor.

He then proceeded to take his now empty water dish over to the couch and chew on it.

“You gotta get him some toys.”

“He’s not my—”

“He’s definitely your dog, Ransom.”

I sighed. “Yeah.”

She pulled out her phone and took a quick snapshot of Midnight on my fawn-colored couch. “Welcome home, Midnight,” she said as she typed.

Then she came over to me and took my hand to lead me up the stairs.

We took a shower together full of touches and soft sighs, ending with me wrapping those long, perfect legs around me as I took her against the stone wall.
