“I’m fine. I promise. A little shaken up, but I’m fine.”

“You scared the fuck out of me.”

She touched my arm. “I’m okay. I’m here.”

After wrenching open my door, I came around the truck to her side and dragged her out. Before her feet even hit the ground, I had her mouth under mine.

She gripped my shoulders, matching my desperation. The kiss was as wild and out of control as my feelings for her.

And maybe even her feelings for me.

“Chaos,” I said against her mouth. “If you ever do something like that again—” I cupped the top of her head, making sure I didn’t get near her wound. “I can’t lose you too.” I pressed a kiss to her forehead, holding her tight.

She readjusted to loop her arms around my lower back. “You’re not going to lose me.”

“You’re damn right, because you’re not going anywhere without me. I don’t care how mad at me you get, you and me are in this until the end.”

She nodded. “Right. Until we get this guy.” She pressed her cheek to my chest. “I promise.”

“I don’t think you’re getting it.” I eased her back.

“I understand. I promise I do. That he could get so close to me, and I was too stupid to realize it was even him.” She shivered.

Lightly, I shook her. “He’s never getting near you again. You got that?”

She nodded.

“You’re everything.”

“What does that mean?” She gripped my shirt. “You can’t keep playing with me about this. Pretending for the cameras without letting me in on it. Did you think I couldn’t handle what needed to be done?”

“No.” Frustration rose in me like a storm. It was fast. Too fast. Everything inside of me rebelled at it, but this felt right—even in the center of insanity.

“You hold on to me like it’s more. I know it is. Or are you lying to yourself?”

“Not anymore.”

She frowned at me.

I cupped her face. “You’re it for me. End of the line. Believe it.” I pressed my forehead to hers. “Please.”

She gripped my wrists. “Ransom, I…”

“I love you, dammit.”

Her greenish-gold eyes widened, but she said nothing. I wasn’t even sure she was still breathing.

She wasn’t the only one.

“I’m not kidding.”

She shook her head. “You’re just saying that because of the whole thing with the—the guy. He almost got me. You’re just running on emotions.”

“Do you know who you’re talking to? When do I run on emotions?”

She shook her head and tried to push me away. “You can’t say crazy stuff like that. Not if you don’t mean it.”

“I mean it.” I grabbed her hands and brought them to my chest, holding them against my racing heart. “I swear it. Never in my life have I ever felt this way about another woman.”
