I swallowed the lump in my throat. “I never should have come home.”

“This is exactly where you should be.”

“What if he hurts my family?”

“I won’t let that happen. Aidan and I will make sure we are all smart about this. No more keeping them in the dark.”

“What if he ruins the wedding?” A quick flash of waking up with my face in the gravel made me grip his hands harder. “I don’t want Rachel to cancel the wedding for me. I know that will be her kneejerk reaction.”

“It won’t come to that.”

“You don’t know that.” I let him go to rub my nose with the back of my hand. “I never thought he’d try to…” I trailed off.

I didn’t even know what he looked like. He’d sneaked up on me and I had no fucking clue.

“He’s never going to get to you like that again.”

“You can’t be with me all the time.” His fierce eyes and locked jaw made me cup his cheek. “There has to be a better way.”

“We’ll figure it out together.”

Shocked, I just laughed. “Did you just own up to teamwork?”

“Makes the dream work, babe.”

I rested my forehead against his chest.

He rubbed my arms. “Let’s go get some rest. I want to check those marks on your neck too.”

I straightened. “You gonna play doctor?”

“Maybe.” He stood and pulled me to my feet. “You seem fixated on that.”

“What about Midnight?”

“I’ll come get him when I do the last lock-up.”

“Perimeter search for the win.” I leaned against him. “What if he’s out there while you are?”

“Then I’ll probably kill him.”

“Ransom.” I stared at him. “No, you won’t.”

“I wouldn’t bet against me.”

“He’s a sick individual, but—”

“I don’t care. He’s not getting near you again.” He cupped my face and I leaned into him.

His sober expression and the lack of tension in his body unnerved me. It was as if making the decision to have no limits in dealing with this bastard had somehow eased him.

“I don’t want you to have to do that. Ever.”

“I’ve done things I’m not proud of, babe. This wouldn’t be one I’d lose sleep over for even a minute. Him or you is no contest.”

“But—” If anything happened to him or if he got in trouble because of me, I would never be able to live with that kind of guilt.

“I won’t apologize for making you my priority.” He took my hand and led me toward the stairs.
