He shook his head and leaned over to pull the door closed. “Where we headed, ladies?”

“I pretty much am doing everything in Crescent Cove. I found a sweet florist there.”

“You got it.”

Rachel adjusted the skirt of her pretty sundress. “I kinda like the chauffeur treatment.”

I leaned against her. “How did the fitting go? More importantly, how was Mom?”

“You know Mom. She was more worried about what it cost versus return.” She cleared her throat to imitate our mother’s snooty tone. “’Rachel, the money you spent on this dress could have gone to your child’s education.’”

I laughed. “Sounds just like her.”

“She hasn’t really caught on to the fact that Clay is worth a bazillion dollars.”

“I’m shocked. Figured she would have had him reviewed by the IRS, for God’s sake.”

“Hush. Don’t even speak that into existence.”

I snorted. “Well, she’s gonna bug you about a grandchild before me.” Not by too much since I was only missing a ring to make my engagement official.

What kind of ring would I get from him? Would I evengeta ring? The actual moment had been mid-orgasm denial, for God’s sake.

I glanced at the rearview mirror and met Ransom’s gaze. He gave me a half-grin and didn’t say a word.

“What’s going on between you two?”

I focused back on my sister. “What are you talking about?”

“There’s a vibe.”

I tugged on the strap of my purse. Now that it was time to spill the beans, my throat wanted to close up, and that was not an ordinary affliction for me. “The drive into Crescent Cove isn’t long enough to tell that story, sis.”

“So, thereisa story?”

Um…

“I asked your sister to marry me.” Ransom threw a quick smile over his shoulder. “Surprise.”

So much for not knowing what to say.

“Jeez, Ransom. You don’t just drop that on people.”

Rachel twisted to face me. “What? I was only gone one day!”

“We have a lot to talk about.”

“You think?” Her mouth dropped open as she looked from me to Ransom and back again. “How?”

“Short story? Or long one?”

“Abbreviated with option for expansion.”

I laughed. “That project was a little more intense than we figured it would be.”

“I’ll say.”

I’d hoped to tell her in like a café or something, with actual coffee maybe from Brewed Awakening since that stuff could put hair on your chest. But maybe in the car was actually better. No one could overhear us.
