We piled out of the car. I wasn’t sure if I should tell her about the incident yesterday or wait to tell the family all at once.

“Don’t stop now. It’s like a really big Band-aid.” She looped her arm through mine.

Ransom glanced around the parking lot, his gaze cool and thorough enough to make me shiver.

“Wil.”

“He was the one who broke into the distillery.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.” Ransom came up beside me and rested his hand protectively on my lower back. “And he tried to take her last night.”

Rachel whirled to face me before socking me with yet another punch. “Don’t you think you should have started with that?”

“Ow.” I rubbed my arm.

She dragged me in for a tight hug. “I would have been so mad if something happened to you, and you’d never told us you were in danger.”

I rubbed her back. “I know. It only happened last night. You guys were still in the city, and I didn’t want to worry you while you couldn’t get home.”

“Thank God nothing bad happened.”

I shook my head at Ransom. We definitely weren’t telling her about the Taser.

“Ransom was there.”

And he always would be. I’d just been too blind to realize it for a minute or three.

She moved from me to Ransom and wrapped her arms around his middle. “Thank you.”

“It’s okay, Rach. She’s just as important to me.” He awkwardly patted her back.

“Hug me back or I’ll punch you too.”

He rolled his eyes and looped his arms around her. “Can we get out of the parking lot now? It’s making me itchy.”

She peered up at him. “Is it that serious?”

“I’m pretty sure he went back into his hole, but I don’t know how long it will last. So, let’s make the best of this, ladies.”

“Right.” She straightened. “I’m glad you were there for her, Ransom.”

“Me, too.” He looked over Rachel’s head and met my gaze. “Me, too.”

I hugged my sister from the back and my long arms were able to take in most of Ransom too. “Group hug!”

Rachel laughed. “This isn’t a laughing matter, Willow Renee.”

“Man, two middle name mentions in the space of twenty-four hours.” I eased back and looked at Ransom. “Hey, how did you know my middle name, anyway?”

Rachel glanced from me to him. “Do I want to know the context?”

“No.”

“Yes.” Ransom grinned. “I used it when I asked her to marry me. Naked.” Then he turned Rachel around and pushed her toward the café. “Let’s go, ladies. We’re burning sunlight.”
