I didn’t answer him right away. They were both very good questions. I’d been hyper-vigilant since I’d left the army. Before everything had changed with Rachel, Clay had been ready to drop me off in the nearest lake and let me find my way home some days.

Maybe even the disgusting Hudson River a time or five.

“The idea of her not in my life sliced me in two. When that asshole almost got her,” I fisted my hands, “I could have killed him.” I met Clay’s gaze. “I still might.”

“Whoa, whoa.”

“He fucking Tased her.”

“What?”

“I didn’t want to scare her family. He disarmed my truck. Hacked it or some such shit. She was a sitting duck. If I hadn’t ran after her like a lunatic, he’d probably have her still.”

“Jesus.”

I took a deep breath against the black spots forming at the corners of my eyes.

“What happened?”

“We had it out. I fucked up and didn’t tell her what I was doing.”

“Gee, I don’t know how that feels. You know you don’t have to do everything on your own, Dougie.”

“God, no. No Dougie crap.”

Clay grinned. “But seriously. It’s not your responsibility to carry everything.”

“I tried to make myself the target instead of her.”

“No wonder she was ready to kick your ass.”

“Tell me about it. She ran. Says she only wanted to take the truck and drive, but I don’t know, man. She was pissed. If I hadn’t been—”

“Yourself? You probably ran after her like Forrest Gump.” Clay cupped his hands around his mouth. “Run, Forrest, run.”

“You’re such a dick.” But the nerves rolled back into their dark hole located at the back of my mind.

“Good thing you did. I’m forever grateful, Ransom. Rachel would be lost without her now that they’ve reconnected. Hell, even before.”

“This guy’s far bolder than I’d given him credit for. I thought he was just going to stay behind his keyboard.” Maybe a small part of me had known it would get worse and hadn’t wanted to believe it.

“What about the security stuff with Roth?”

“Evidently, there’s a dark web full of pieces of shit like this guy. They sell videos to the highest bidder.”

“Like paparazzi?”

“Worse. But yeah, there are a ton of people who will pay good money to find out everything about celebrities. Aidan found some hits on his own clients, as well. He’s going to have a mess to clean up and look into beyond what’s going on with Chaos.”

“That’s terrifying.”

“You have no idea. I’d prefer you don’t. It’s given me nightmares already.”

“So, what are you guys going to do now?”

“I just don’t know. Aidan’s agreed to run point at the wedding if I need him to. There will be a helluva lot of people there even with the intimate tone of the wedding.”

“Whatever you need.”
