Freaking Tasers

“I know, I know. I wasn’t sure I could make it, so I didn’t want to say yes to the wedding.” Maple hugged me tight. She was tanned, probably wearing something couture, and creating a stir in the room as usual. Famous super model and all.

“Weren’t you in Madrid or something?”

“Milan.”

“La-di-da.”

My sister launched herself at me again. She smelled of something expensive and heady. It was so her and so foreign at the same time. It had been at least three years since we’d seen each other face to face. “I miss your dry humor, grumpy.”

“I want you to meet someone.”

“Oh? A girl someone? Or a guy. I don’t judge.”

“Good to know. No, it’s a woman.” I led her through the small group of people who had congregated around the chafing dishes full of food.

Everyone was hungry, including me. But I wanted Maple to meet Chaos first. I was certain they’d get along well.

I didn’t see her near the icy blond by the door. I looked around, my gaze bouncing from Laverne to Rachel to their parents. My heart kicked and the skin between my shoulder blades burned.

“Chaos?” I called out. I didn’t care if she thought I was overreacting.

Nothing.

Reid crossed to me. “What’s wrong?”

I didn’t know what to say to him and he tossed a hot, shocked look toward Maple before the frozen blue of his eyes turned emotionless once again. “Where’s Chaos—Willow?”

Reid slid his hand out of his pocket, suddenly more alert. “I think I saw her get up to go to the restroom.”

“Where?”

Reid frowned. “What’s wrong?” he repeated.

“Where. Did. She. Go?”

“Through there.”

I left my sister there and started running. The hallway was dark since we were the only party in the B&B right now. I called her name, my heart pounding in my ears.

“Chaos!”

“What the fuck is going on?” Reid followed me.

“Too much to get into.”

“This isn’t just you being a possessive freak, is it?” Reid jogged after me.

“No.” I glanced right and left. “Chaos?” My voice carried, but there was no answer.

I heard the click of a door and took a left. It was a side exit out into the orchard.

Reid ran after me, and we both crashed through the door hard enough that it bounced against the hinges and slammed into my hip before I could get clear.

I swore, but I kept running. My hands shook, but my breathing evened out as I suddenly became very cold. Everything went stone silent in my head as I searched the dark.
