His musical taste was close to mine, but I wanted some mindless pop right now. I put in my headphones and listened to my happy playlist and did a little research on Roth Defense. I was fairly certain if there wasn’t a price package on the website, I couldn’t afford them.

Just what kind of friends did Ransom have? I knew Clay came from money, but did that mean Ransom did too?

Everything inside me wanted to research Ransom’s name too, but something held me back. I could’ve done it without guilt since he now knew far too much aboutme, but the wall around him gave me pause.

So, I played my puzzle game to even me out for a few minutes, but even that wasn’t cutting it.

Finally, I couldn’t wait any longer for a break. My butt was asleep and my bladder was crying. When I saw the sign for a rest stop, I pulled out my ear bud.

“Can we stop?”

“We still have three hours to go.”

“Yeah, well, it was a big coffee.”

He sighed, but he signaled to move over. With the way he was driving, we were definitely going to make it into the city in less than four hours. Well, depending on traffic when we got closer to Manhattan anyway.

He pulled into the rest stop and I went to hop out.

“Hang on.” He climbed out and came around the truck to open my door.

“I’d like to think you’re being a gentleman, but I doubt it.”

He took my hand, helping me down. “My grandmother taught me well, Chaos.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Hmm.”

His gaze swept the parking lot as we headed for the food court where the bathrooms were.

“I can go to the bathroom myself, you know.”

“I had just as much coffee.”

Somehow I doubted he’d have stopped if I hadn’t asked him, but I decided to keep my mouth shut for once. If he wanted to play mister protective, who was I to dissuade him?

Too bad his protection didn’t make for a clean bathroom.Ugh.Quickly, I did my business and washed my hands.

He was leaning on one of the vending machines when I came out. At first glance, he looked like any other guy waiting for his partner to finish with the toilets, but he wasn’t on his phone like most people these days. Instead, his intense eyes were taking in everyone and checking the exits. I couldn’t imagine living that way—being on guard at all times.

Finally, his wintery gaze drifted to me. He straightened and I noticed he had a bag in his hand.

When I got to him, he held it out. I took it and peered in, surprised to find more Swedish Fish, the soda I preferred—Coke Zero, not diet—and two 100 Grand Bars. I frowned at him.

He shrugged. “You seem to like snacks.”

“How did you know about this?” I held up the candy bar.

“Rach put some in your stocking at Christmas.”

“And you remembered?”

“I like them too.”

“Oh.”

His eyebrow arched.

“I thought you got two for me.”
