Willow

Winter Soldier Hot

The ride into Brooklyn was silent. Not even the radio broke the quiet.

I stared out the window and couldn’t stop touching my lips. They were abraded from his beard and I was probably pink from the…whoa.

Kiss didn’t cover it.

I’d been kissed plenty. That wasn’t kissing. That was more.

Jesus, Wil, be a bit more fanciful.

And that was why he probably wouldn’t do it again. How was I supposed to go back to our regularly scheduled programming afterthat?

I glanced over at him. His jaw was still doing that flex-y thing, telling me he was gnashing the hell out of his molars. TMJ, anyone?

I forced myself to relax my own tight jaw. Kissing wasn’t supposed to have this kind of effect.

Sure, you could get all fluttery and want to make sure it happened again. Half the time, the second kiss wasn’t nearly as exciting. First contact was where the rush was at.

That was probably how this was going to be.

Surely.

There. I could handle that. I mean, not that I wanted to kiss him again. I usually wanted to toss flour at his face, not get a hold of those hard slashes of lips with a ridiculous softness that I wasn’t expecting.

Oh, yeah. We’re so cool. Except not.

He turned onto a quieter street, and I finally realized we were in my neighborhood. Dusk was fast approaching, and the misty rain made the park across from my apartment seem ominous.

The vintage lights on the path flickered like fireflies on the damp evening. I’d always loved the park. I’d done more than a few videos there on the wrought iron and wood bench, usually ideas for picnics and easy to fix romantic lunch dates.

One of my biggest videos had been for my mustardy potato salad and toasty club sandwiches. It felt like a million years ago.

Knowing that I’d been out there, making my silly little videos and someone might have been watching me…

I pulled my jacket tighter around my body.

“Cold?” Ransom reached for the heater.

I shook my head. “We’re just about there.”

He dropped his hand to his lap, his fingers drumming lightly. I only noticed because he always seemed so damn still. So relaxed in every situation while I was freaking out.

“You must be ready to drop me off and run for the hills, huh?”

He gave me a side-eyed glance.

“After all that from Poe and Aidan, I mean. I’m just a hot mess of a situation.”

He gripped the steering wheel harder.

See?He was totally rethinking his deal with me. He’d gotten out of the bodyguard game, and I was way too much of a problem.

“I can move into one of the lodge rooms. I’m sure Aunt Laverne can find me something until the wedding. Then it’ll be all packed, so I’ll have to figure out something else, but until then, I can just stay over there. Easy peasy. There will be tons of people around.”

His jaw suddenly eased.
