“With who?”

“Chaos. I told her I’d put her bed together for the attic.”

Clay raised his eyebrow as he folded his arms. “So, where did she sleep last night?”

“None of your business, Dad.” I went to the little shop vac I used to get the shavings off me before tracking sawdust in the house.

“Is there something going on between you two?”

I hit my jeans a extra few times before I answered him. We were heading into a sticky area with family and I hadn’t checked with Chaos about how much we wanted to share. I was officially a clusterfuck of idiocy.

I turned off the machine. “We’re just working on your wedding gift. Not a big deal.”

“Why don’t I believe you?”

“Not my problem.”

“She wouldn’t put up with your shit anyway.” He shoved his hands into his pockets. “Can you bring her over to the house? And for the love of God, get your fitting done before Rachel takes another strip out of my hide.”

I hung my head. “Yeah. I’ll do it today.”

“Promise?”

I rolled my eyes. “Now you sound like Rachel.”

“Happy wife, happy life. You’ll see.”

Unlikely. “Are you coming in?”

“Nah. I have a meeting in less than an hour.”

“Why didn’t you just go check with her?”

“Because you’ve got this place outfitted like the White House, man. And you changed the locks again, so I don’t have a key.”

My fail column was getting lots of checkmarks. “Sorry. I forgot. I’ll get one made.”

I’d put in a new door last month. Part of the house overhaul had included upgrading locks and security. Now I was glad I had gone through the trouble since I had a precious houseguest.

“It’s fine. The wedding has gotten us all a little fried.”

“You mean you guys.”

Clay transferred his hands to his pockets, rocking back on his heels. “I just want to make sure it’s perfect for her.”

“It will be. Rachel will make sure of it.”

He laughed. “That’s the truth. All right, I’m gonna head out.”

I leaned against my work bench. “You could have just called. Checking on us?”

“If I am?”

I crossed my arms. “She’s a big girl.”

Clay stared at me for a beat. “It feels like there’s more to this.”

I was tempted to share about what Chaos was into, but then his worried frown made me hold my tongue. There was nothing they could do yet except worry.
