Dammit.
Now I’ll have to return it to him. And I have no intention of being alone with him in that office again.
I sigh, pulling on a pair of sneakers and heading out into the hallway. He’s already got a head start, so I quickly scramble down the staircase, descending the four flights fast to try and catch him.
But I’m still one floor up, when I hear his voice in the stairwell, talking to someone on the phone.
“I told you, I need more time.”
His voice is tense. Angry. Nothing like the usual calm, commanding tones.
“I understand my commitments. But this is a large payment, and it’ll take planning to keep it under the radar.”
I freeze. Payment?
I peer over the railing, just to check I’m not making a mistake, but it’s Caleb there alright, angrily hanging up his cellphone. He stands there a moment, totally still, and then suddenly whirls around and buries his fist in the concrete wall.
“Dammit!”
His curse echoes, and I gasp in shock.
He looks up at the sound, but I duck back just in time. I hear him exit the building, and watch from the stairwell window as he gets into the town car waiting outside, and glides smoothly away.
“It’ll take planning to keep it under the radar.”
I feel a chill. Could this be the embezzlement Olivia was after? I was so wrapped up in my lust today, I didn’t think it through, but now I see, this mission just got a whole lot more complicated.
Because there’s no staying away from Caleb. Not if I need to catch him in the act.
