Then Caleb lifts his fingers to his mouth, and slowly licks them clean with a wicked smile, his eyes never leaving mine.

And I know, control is off the table for good now.

Because this is a man who will take it. Revel in it.

And God, I will willingly surrender.

“Dessert?”

I blink. The waitress is back at our table, beaming at us expectantly.

“No.” Caleb answers for me, his arm still draped protectively around my shoulder. “We’ll take the check now. Fast.”

I don’t know how my legs are still working after that, but Caleb pays the check and hustles us towards the door. It’s clear, he has a destination in mind, but when he brings out his phone to order the car, he pauses.

“Fuck.”

“What is it?”

“Work.” He grits his teeth. “Some important papers I need to sign. We have to detour to the office.”

“Oh. OK.”

I’m in no state to argue. In fact, the journey passes in a daze. I’m light-headed and buzzing, but I only had half a glass of wine.

Caleb is the most potent drug around.

The car pulls up at the office and we head inside. The place looks different after-hours, with empty offices and only a few dim security lights glowing. He leads me to his office, and tells me to have a seat. “I need to put my signature on a few papers at legal. It won’t take a moment.”

He heads out, and I go to sit on the sofa, my body trembling with anticipation. I tell myself to relax, even though I’m wound so tight, I’m practically vibrating.

What will he do next?

I’ve already had a hint of what ‘obscene things’ Caleb is capable of, and now my mouth is watering imagining what else tonight has in store. Would he take me right here on the couch? The desk? The—

I stop. His phone is sitting on the glass desktop, the screen still glowing from where he just checked it.

It’s still unlocked.

I rocket off of the couch and rush over, clicking through to his call log before the time lock goes on. I scroll down to last night, around the time he was at my apartment, looking for anything he called or received.

But there’s nothing.

I frown, checking again. It was about nine thirty when he left. But there’s no calls logged here between nine and ten that night.

What does that mean? Either he deleted the record, or…

He has another phone.

Before I can process what that might mean, I hear footsteps approaching in the hall outside.

I quickly lock the phone and place it back down where I found it, then take a few steps to the window, pretending to admire the view.

“All set?” I ask, glancing back at Caleb as he enters the room.

He nods. “I’m officially off the clock again.”

He joins me at the window, gazing out at the city lights. The view from up here is stunning: New York laid out in a glittering vista, the Empire State Building to the East River, and Brooklyn Bridge beyond. “I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of this view,” I sigh happily.
