“I know all kinds of things,” I lie, tired of feeling like the wide-eyed innocent around all his sexual games.

“Interesting…” Caleb’s fingers roam higher. “I can’t wait to discover exactly what you know. And what I can teach you.”

I inhale sharply. Right now, all I know is that I’m in serious danger of coming apart under his hands in the middle of a crowded ballroom. But luckily, before I can lose all composure, there’s a thunderous round of applause—and everyone’s looking in our direction.

I know Caleb is skilled, but a standing ovation?

“Congratulations,” people at our table are saying.

I look at Caleb, confused. “I’ll be right back,” he says, getting to his feet. He strides swiftly to the podium and shakes the host’s hand, accepting some kind of award.

That’s when I notice the tasteful banner, and the printed programs on our table. New York Society of the Arts honors our Donor of the Year: Caleb Sterling.

I gape. No wonder Caleb had to show up: He’s the reason for the event!

“I’m not one for speeches,” Caleb is saying into the mic. “But being honored like this is truly… Well, it’s an honor. So many people work so hard on behalf of this organization, so, I’ll dedicate this award to them. Thank you.”

Applause erupts again as he leaves the podium. Making his way back to our table, people stop to congratulate him and offer words of praise. He accepts them politely, but I can tell, his impatience is growing. He’s just about to rejoin me when an older guy intercepts him, red-faced and jovial.

“Sterling! Fine show, my friend.” He stumbles a little, and holds onto a nearby chair for support. Clearly, that glass of champagne in his hand isn’t his first tonight.

“Thank you,” Caleb replies pleasantly.

“I only wish your old man was around to see it. You’ve done him proud, for sure.”

Caleb’s shoulders stiffen imperceptibly.

“He was a fine man, Jacob.” The man sighs. “Damn shame, that accident. Damn shame.”

Caleb doesn’t answer, and the man moves off.

“Everything OK?” I ask, moving to his side.

“Fine.” Caleb’s voice is clipped, but he covers any emotion with a charming smile. “I’ve had enough of this place, that’s all. Get your things, we’re leaving. It’s time for your punishment.”
