“We’d love to have your help,” Nox said. “Give us a minute to grab some things.”

Luca followed Nox back into the trailer and said, “Why are you being nice to him?”

“Because he’s giving us a car and supplies.”

“He owes us more than a car and supplies.”

Nox smirked. “You can always ask for his motorhome.” He nodded at the clutter lined up next to the wall near the basin they used for water to bathe with. “Get the toiletries. We’ll need a toothbrush, soap, and towels. I’ll get the extra blankets.”

Luca filled up his arms. He tried to pack them into the empty basin, but the items piled up and rolled over the edge. “I need a bag to put this in.”

Nox picked up a pillow and stripped off the case. “Here.”

Luca took it. “This stuff isn’t really ours.”

“Like you said, he owes us. And we’ll need it if it takes a few days to get a motel room. If it makes you feel better, we can leave it with the car when we’ve got our own supplies.” Nox rolled up the blankets and used a sheet to tie them down. “Something wrong?”

“He’s not arguing,” Luca said.

Nox gathered up the coats.

“And neither are you.” Luca raised his eyebrows. “Why not?”

“You’ve made up your mind.” Nox shrugged. “We’ll do this for now, and if things get bad….”

“You mean if I get sick.”

“Or I get sick.” Without the Anubis, Nox could fall ill as easily as Luca.

He dropped a few things into the pillowcase. “Do you think it will come back?”

Nox shook his head. “I don’t know, but if you start feeling bad—”

“I’m not talking about my cancer.”

“I—” Nox leaned against the wall. “We’ll worry about that later.” He carried the stuff to the ramp. Luca swept the rest of the supplies into the pillowcase and raced after him.

Nox propped himself against the far end of the trailer. His pale complexion stood out in the shadows.

“Nox…”

“Maybe a hospital isn’t a bad idea.”

“Is everything okay?” Isaiah walked up.

“No. He’s not okay.” At least Luca refrained from reminding Isaiah why.

“Here, let me help you to the car.”

“I can help him.” Luca cut Isaiah off. He didn’t want the man anywhere near Nox. He didn’t want any of them near him.

“I’m stronger than you,” Isaiah said.

“Then you can carry everything else. I’ll help him.”

“Luca.” The pain in Nox’s tone rendered Luca silent. “Let him help me. I’m too heavy for you.”

Luca started to argue but Nox was right. And if Luca fell while trying to help Nox, he could wind up with more injuries.
