“And it involves Luca and your wolves.”
Seung lowered her gaze. “Yes.”
“I don’t know how to get them back for you,” Luca said. “I told Isaiah the same thing.”
“It’s okay. It may take a while.”
Luca huffed. “And I’ll just magically know how?”
“If I knew, I’d tell you, but it’s a secret every Cana has with the Fenrir, and I doubt any of them could have explained it if they wanted to.”
“And why are you working with the Mah?” Nox said.
“We both want to save our people.” Seung crossed her arms over her stomach. “We’ve been working together ever since we discovered what was happening at the Utah Facility. The Mah needed Dr. Dante, and I had a way to keep watch over him that they didn’t. And I needed their resources to save you and Luca. Thanks to Johnathan, you’re alive.”
“Who’s Johnathan?”
“Paul Dekker’s twin brother.”
Nox lunged.
“Stop.” Luca shielded Seung with his body.
She didn’t even blink. “He would have killed Paul if you hadn’t.”
Nox snarled.
“Johnathan isn’t his brother, Mr. Kelli. He might look like him, but he’s a completely different person.”
Luca pushed at Nox’s shoulders. “Sit. Please.”
Nox realized how close he was. Inches from her face. Inches from her throat.
Seung’s exhale warmed Nox’s lips.
Yet she still held his gaze.
“I’m sorry.” Nox sat. “It’s just…”
“It’s going to get worse.”
Luca glared at the woman and said, “Not you too.”
“It’s the truth.”
Luca’s face reddened. “Are you going to poison him with Rakta like Isaiah?”
“I couldn’t if I wanted to. He’s immune to it now. But I’m not interested in destroying what he is.”
“Why not?” Nox had no idea how the woman could look at him without fear. Even Craige, three times her size, watched him with wariness. “If you really know it’s going to get worse, you know how dangerous I am.” He tipped his head at her. “To you.” Then Craige. “To him.”
“I’m well aware.”
“I don’t think you are.” Nox wasn’t sure anyone could completely comprehend it.
“I lived through the first incarnation of the Anubis, Mr. Kelli. I climbed the mountains of bodies made from the people it killed. I buried my friends who fell when trying to destroy it.”
Nox clenched his eyes shut for a moment.
