More to hunt.

Him.

Seung shook him. “Don’t get lost in what you feel.”

“I’m okay.” Reese didn’t expect her to believe him. He didn’t believe himself.

A high-pitched cry echoed from far away, followed by a thundering roar.

Run.

The word became Reese’s heartbeat.

Run.

The need replaced the air in his lungs.

Run.

Everything around Reese condensed to an endless tunnel where nothing mattered but reaching the end.

He made it less than twenty feet before a weight plowed into his back, shoving him to the ground. Dust puffed up around his face, coating the inside of his nose and mouth.

“For god’s sake, Dr. Dante, stop moving.” Seung locked her elbow around his neck.

And make it easy forthem? Iftheywere weak, then they didn’t deserve to…

Seung cranked Reese’s arm back, and the white-hot pain snatched him back to reality.

“You’re going to break my arm.” Reese forced the words from behind clenched teeth.

“Yeah, well, better that than what they’ll do to you if you lure them out.”

Craige, Johnathan, and Dalton watched him. The green in their eyes bright enough to show in the sunlight.

The space around them gained mass and pushed through Reese in pulsing waves.

A sensation Reese was all too familiar with. It just wasn’t as strong as what radiated from Nash Kelli or his team when they would Phase.

Seung snarled, and it was so much like a wolf. Reese thought for a moment she’d changed. But when she bared her teeth, there were no fangs to back up the threat.

“What’s going on?” And Reese could only hope Seung would understand he meant with himself more than the Mah.

Seung continued to glare at the three men while she spoke, “You’ve got a connection to theVarana. You can’t bring wolves across like Luca, but you can channel the energy of theSuvar.”

“You’re not making any sense.” Sweat dripped into Reese’s eyes.

Seung lifted her head. “For fuck’s sake, Johnathan. Snap out of it.”

Confusion replaced the feral expression on Jonathan’s face. He blinked several times, then seemed to realize he wasn’t the only one standing there. “Craige, Dalton.” Both the men startled, then they too returned from wherever they’d gone. “You got him, Seung?”

“Yeah.”

And part of Reese mourned it. Somehow jabbing a stick into the hornets’ nest felt right.

Johnathan gave his men a push. They turned and went into the house. When the door shut, Seung eased her hold on Reese’s arm. The pain returned, but it didn’t linger.

“Can I trust you not to run like an idiot?”
