“They’re too far. Even the Varu can’t call them. That’s why I think the farther he’s away from us, the less likely our wolves will hear him and vice versa.”

“And what happens if they still hear him when he runs?”

Dekker opened his mouth then snapped it shut. “Then the wolves will hunt.”

“And if you’re not there to catch him?”

Dekker’s upper lip twitched. “Then someone else…” His voice deepened with a growl. “Will catch him.”

“That’s not what I mean.” Nox sat forward. “What if none of you are there to catch him?”

Dekker stared out the window. “I told you, there isn’t a lot to go on.”

“What does your father think will happen?”

Wind chimes rang on the front porch, and the swing flashed back and forth in the window. Thunder rumbled and a fat raindrop splattered against the one closest to them.

Pain crumpled Dekker’s features. “If Dr. Dante runs, he will become the wolf in mind, but not in body. Fenrir or the Sarvari, both would tear him apart, mentally and physically because they’d never reach him. And if they can’t reach him, he won’t be able to stop.”
