ChapterNineteen

Luca couldn’t take his eyes off the field in front of the house and how Nox disappeared under the wave of smaller black bodies.

His chest tightened.

“He’ll be okay,” Seung said.

Would he?

Nox emerged in a volcanic explosion of shredded flesh and fur. Then the station wagon headed down an incline, and the battle disappeared behind the ridge.

“Where are we going?”

“I drive until Johnathan contacts us and gives us a place to meet him.”

“And what if he doesn’t call?”

Seung flicked a look up at the review. Her betas shifted in their seats.

“What if he doesn’t call?” Luca touched her arm.

She glanced at him. “I’ll contact Grey.”

“Will he help?”

“He’ll protect you.”

“There’s more than me in this car.”

“The only one that matters in this car is you.” And the way Seung said it left no room for argument.

The space behind the vehicle remained empty. “They aren’t following us.” That couldn’t be a good thing. “Does that mean they’re all chasing Dr. Dante?”

When Seung didn’t answer, Luca turned in his seat. All three betas wore the same worried expression.

Eric frowned and leaned forward.

Luca followed his gaze. In the distance, off to the right, an earth-colored object moved.

“We’ve got company. M-ATV Assault vehicles two o’clock,” Eric said.

Seung cursed.

“What’s an M-ATV Assault?” Luca squinted.

Ty answered. “Armored military transport truck. But those aren’t standard. Too big, too low to the ground. Meant to carry a lot more people or supplies. Unfortunately, they appear to have similar armor.”

The objects gained size as they closed in, becoming truck-shaped. On the roof of one vehicle, a turret.

Gun slides clicked in the back seat. The betas checked their handguns and put on armored vests.

“Give Luca mine,” Seung said.

James set it on the console. The pseudo-M-ATV adjusted its trajectory, bee-lining in their direction.

“Put it on.” Seung took the station wagon into an arch, maintaining distance.

“What about you?”
