The silver Fenrir tensed.

“Wait.” Luca held up his hands. “Don’t kill him. He knows something.”

“If I were you,” the man said. “I wouldn’t listen to Mr. Suarez.” He put his hand on the gun on his belt.

A growl rolled through the vehicle. Bloody saliva dripped in strings from the jaws of the silver Fenrir.

“Seung, wait.” To the man, Luca said, “Who do you work for?”

He grinned but didn’t look at Luca.

“Why are you after Dr. Dante? Why are you after me?”

The man laughed. “Thimblerig, Mr. Suarez. Remember that word. It’s the last one you’re ever going to hear.” He pulled his gun.

A flash of silver swept the man off his feet. Seung’s wolf flung its head, turning him into a rag doll. The wolf slapped the body against the sides of M-ATV until its stuffing broke free in spongy chunks.

“Seung?” James said. “Nine o’clock, we’ve got a problem.”

The silver wolf retreated, leaving Seung soaked in blood and ankle-deep in human remains.

She was so beautiful with such kind eyes. Someone like that shouldn’t be able to kill so mercilessly.

What disturbed Luca more than witnessing it was understanding why she’d done it.

And agreeing with her decision.

“Are you okay?” She touched Luca’s face, arms, and chest, patting down his body, stopping where blood soaked his clothes and lifting the fabric.

“I’m okay. The blood isn’t mine.”

She pressed a hand to his side, and he winced.

“Kidney punch. It’s just a bruise.”

“Seung!” James glanced back at them.

Seung led Luca to the front and made him sit in the passenger seat. The outside flashed past.

“Buckle up.”

Luca did.

“They’re not moving fast, but we’re barely staying ahead. Fucking thing tops out as sixty-five.” James shifted gears, and the engine rose an octave.

“How much fuel do we have?”

“Twenty-gallon tank, roughly seventeen miles to the gallon.” He grimaced. “Not great.”

“Can you hold them off long enough for me to get Luca out of here?”

“Yeah, but I don’t know for how long. They outnumber us three to one.”

Copper flavored Luca’s mouth. The scent of death and rage filled his lungs.

“You won’t be outnumbered for long,” Luca said.

Seung and James looked at him.
