“Mars,” Lee said, ignoring Eli completely, “Can you get my clothes ready for the evening. I’m going to the club.” He looked back to Eli and said, “This’ll be your first outing with me. I’m not expecting perfection but try to keep with the group.”

He left with a flourish. Eli stared where he’d been, wondering how big of a mistake it was that he had taken this job. “Go get ready for the country club, Mr. Bloom.”

“Oh, right. Yeah.”

He went to his suite and into the bathroom to shower, knowing that he’d have to be up at four every morning, no matter how late he’d gone to sleep, just to have time to shower and dress. Then he’d get Lee up, get Mars to get his clothes and start his day, rushing after a senator and his impossibly busy schedule.

He opened his closet to pull out something that may be nice enough for a country club, but when he looked at the packed closet, filled with clothes in garment bags, he couldn’t believe his eyes. “What the hell?”

He pulled a couple out and laid them out on the bed, opening the first to see a light brown suit that was nicer than anything he’d worn in his life.

The other was navy and made of silk. He ran to the armoire and threw the doors open to find new sweaters folded and stacked by color, from white to dark brown. In the drawers were pairs of underwear and socks that were equally new and expensive.

On the shoe shelf in the closet, there were three pairs of every kind of shoe from loafers to leather dress shoes. He picked up one of the pairs of dress shoes in his hands and looked at the label.Gancini. He’d never heard of them, but why would he? He’d never worn such names.

Looking it up on his new phone, he saw that the shoes he’d just replaced on the rack were almost two thousand dollars.

“How’d they even know my size?”

New clothes or not, he had no idea what to wear for the evening. He called Mars quickly, and the man, like he flew around the house, was there less than a minute later.

“I have a lot to learn, I get it, but I don’t have time for a full lesson right now. What do I wear to a country club?”

Mars snickered but stopped himself. “Sorry, Mr. Bloom. Well, tonight is a simple dinner, but they are rarely simple. You’ll be seen for the first time in Senator Madison’s presence, so you’ll want to make a good impression.”

“Okay, yes, that makes sense. So, dressy?”

“Mr. Bloom, no. No, no.”

Mars looked quickly through his closet and pulled out another garment bag, a pair of dress shoes in a lighter color and then found a tie from the full tie rack. “These should do nicely, Mr. Bloom.”

“Thanks, Mars. Really, thank you.”

His lips twitched though he never really let himself smile. “You’re welcome.”
