Chapter Seven

The day was a blur and he made it that way. Lee Madison had his eye on the ethical bunny that Eli was. Soft, sweet, and cuddly, but Lee had plans for him. Soon enough, he’d be Lee’s dirty beast.

“Jefferson, you look good,” he said to his friend, the South Carolina Representative in the House.

He didn’t look good, of course, he was an overweight slob that inevitably had food stains on his tie. Jefferson, named for Jefferson Davis, sat across from Lee on the other side of his desk and sighed. “I would look better if all this bullshit were over with. Who the fuck leaked the investigations?”

“Marley is thinking one of the interns.”

“Rumor has it that you have a new intern.”

Lee laughed, loving the misinformation that constantly went around Capitol Hill. “Not an intern, Jefferson. He’s a paid, and paid well, assistant. And he is under my thumb as far as anyone can be. I own his phone, all his electronics and most of his clothes have tracking devices. Not that he knows any of that.”

“I guess I’ll have to go question Bridger. Maybe he’s got the rebel intern.”

“Good luck finding him or her.”

“Or it,” Jefferson called over his shoulder, laughing at his own pitiful joke.

“Idiot,” Lee mumbled to himself.

He took opened his laptop and navigated to the page where he could watch his assistant as he ran the errands he was given. Sure enough, he was at the bank. “Good boy.”

Later, when checking however, he found his assistant was in his old apartment. “What are you doing there, Eli? Talking to your friends?”

He picked up the phone and called Mars.

“Sir, what do you need?”

“Eli is wandering. Get him back in line, Mars.”

There was a hesitation he didn’t expect, but soon enough, Mars agreed, “I’ll take care of it, sir.”

When Eli got back to the capitol, he finally made it to Lee’s office, arm filled with stacks of papers. “Senator, this was waiting outside for you. There are hundreds of letters from your constituents.”

“Why the hell did you bring them inside here? Take them down to the incinerator.”

After unloading the folders on his leather couch, Eli turned to him, whining, “These have been gone through, the threats been given to the FBI, the receptionist said.”

“I don’t give two fucks, Eli. She should know better too. Does it really look like I have time to go over letters?”

Eli dug in the folders and pulled out a newspaper, bringing it over to the desk. “It said here that your office’s phone wasn’t working so people should write send their correspondence in to the office.”

“Yes, Eli. That’s what we do. They elected me to represent them. They knew my policies. If they want more or different, I’ll deal with that during elections. For now, I’ve got enough.”

He watched Eli’s eyes narrow at him and he sat back in his chair, staring right back.

Reversing, Eli stormed to the office door, slamming it before heading right back to the desk, leaning over it. “Is it enough for you, doing what all the others do?”

“Yes. Next question.”

“Why? Why do you want it like this? Don’t you have enough money?”

Folding his hands over his stomach, he smiled and explained in a chipper, sarcastic voice that he hoped would convey his irritation over the conversation he’d had a few times in his life already. “No, as in, there is never enough in my many accounts all over the world. I could save plenty by continuing to have my butler pull double duty and take care of the things you do. I’d save a lot, actually. Especially because he’d likely not be able to do both jobs well enough to keep his present salary, so I’d cut it in half.”

“You’d actually do that. Wouldn’t you?”

“Yes,” Lee said flatly, letting the smile fall from his lips. “Remember that next time I invite you to my room.”
