“Do you know why his mom left?” I ask, afraid that she’ll get annoyed with me for asking so many questions about Abram. She must think I’m desperate for him or something.

She shrugs. “His father was an addict. A bad one. He once spent all of their rent money on heroin, and his family was kicked out of their apartment,” she replies, her voice distant and sad.

“But he was still upset with her for leaving?” I ask.

“I mean, yeah. He was just a kid, and he loved his mom. But she didn’t want to have him in the first place, and having to raise him with her drug addict husband had some diminishing returns, I guess. It was her life. She’s definitely not the first woman to leave her children behind,” she replies, looking me in the eyes with sincerity. “I know you’re worried about him hurting you, but try to be patient with him too. He’s gone through a lot. Maybe things will work out with you two. Don’t get your hopes up, but nothing’s impossible.”

She places her hand on mine.

Just as I’m about to reply, I feel a heavy hand on my shoulder.

I look back, and my stomach drops.
