The other women and girls purr over their new pieces, taking photos as soon as they’ve been placed in their ears or around their slender necks. Some of them weren’t even as good as me. Are they just prettier?

As soon as the excitement dies down, Ariella hands out the new-hire schedules to all the lucky girls, ignoring me entirely. She doesn’t even show me to the door.

I turn away, intending to follow the other girls out of the club, but suddenly, Ariella looks up at me and holds up her hand. “Don’t go just yet. I still have something for you,” she says.

I freeze, struggling to understand what she could mean. Did I make it on?

Ariella comes toward me after a moment, quickly dropping a necklace over my head and smiling. “You’re one of the lucky ones,” she says.

I look down at the glittering jewels, even more confused. “I don’t understand, I thought it would have been a diamond necklace, but this one is blue,” I say, trying not to show too much emotion as my chest bubbles up with cautious excitement.

“If you were going to be on your knees in a limo, it would be, but sometimes, Abram finds a girl that hereallylikes, and he gives her aspecialjob,” she explains, her expression unreadable. “I need you to wait here.”
