“Damn, that’s good. Anyway, the reason I wanted to talk to you, aside from hearing your voice,” he said, “is because I know your brother.”

“Not surprising.” Oliver had been at Huachuca for a long time, as an instructor, then as a drill sergeant, and finally, working in the detachment. He had a few deployments under his belt, but they always sent him back to Arizona. “That’s why you got that funny look when you saw my name.”

“Yes.”

“Does he know we met?”

“He does. I stopped by his office on the way back to mine to talk with him.”

“Did he give his blessing?”

Antony laughed. “He asked if I was looking for it.” He was quiet for a moment. “No. Like I told him, there’s no blessing or permission needed from anyone except you.”

Warmth flooded her. “Thank you.”

“No reason to thank me, Lesley. My momma raised me right.” He lowered his voice. “So, about that dance?”

“Same club?”

“Club? Oh, no. I have something else in mind.”

Lesley laid back and kicked her legs up. “Oh, really. Planning to get me alone, Antony?”

“Damn skippy.”

She gasped theatrically. “What kind of girl do you think I am?”

His low chuckle gave her a shiver. “I aim to find out, Lesley.” He listened to the catch in her breath and smiled. “I want to take you to one of my favorite restaurants in Bisbee. Have you been there yet?”

“I haven’t. I’ve wanted to. It sounds like a fun place.”

“It’s weird. But yes, it’s a fun little town. Tombstone is, too, but you’ve got to be in the mood for the kitsch to deal with it there.”

She heard him yawn. “You haven’t slept yet, have you?”

“No, and I made the mistake of laying down.”

“Well, go to bed before you fall asleep.”

“What makes you think I’m not already in bed, Lesley?”

She exhaled sharply, and he laughed.

“You’re a wicked man, Antony.”

“No. Well, maybe. Just in the fun ways. I’ll stop.”

“I didn’t say I didn’t like it. Don’t stop.”

He hummed his approval. “I’ll keep that in mind. I am drifting off, though. Much as I don’t want to hang up, I don’t think you want to listen to me snore.”

Lesley laughed softly. “Sweet dreams, Antony.”

“Of you, Lesley.

CHAPTER SEVEN

Antony walked into the office to find four folding plastic tables set up with eight evidence boxes on them. Simon sat at one end of one table, and Audrey at the other. Each of them had piles of papers in front of them.
