“They’re helping with intake over at the schoolhouse.”

Well, there went those plans for the evening. She didn’t bother keeping the disappointment off her face. “Got it.”

“It won’t be a late night. You should be done by around 2130 at the latest.” He handed her a folder with a couple of sheets of paper. “Here’s the roster. Just three of them. If they get done with that list early, let ‘em go.”

“Will do, Top.” She stood.

“No need to stand,” he said.

“I need to go make a call. I’ll walk out with you.”

As they moved down the hallway, First Sergeant Murray glanced over. “I’m guessing I just wrecked some good plans.”

Lesley shrugged. “Something about plans surviving first contact. Not a big deal.”

He stopped at the hallway intersection. “I have to go wreck someone else’s evening. I do appreciate it, Prosser, even if you have no choice. Just get ‘em done and maybe you can have some of your evening.”

She nodded and made her way to her phone.

“Don’t even,” Antony said, picking up on the first ring.

“I won’t. And I can’t make it tonight.”

“The hell?”

“Babysitting troublemakers. CQ’s on intake duty tonight.”

“Well shit. Want me to put on a uniform and come give them hell with you?”

Lesley laughed. “As much fun as that might be, no. Too much frustration in too close of quarters.”

“Mmhmm. I get it. Well shit. Tomorrow?”

“Absolutely. I’ll call you when I get home.”

Lesley stepped away from the work detail and pulled out her phone.

“It’s after Retreat. Please don’t tell me you’re still at work.”

“I’m still at work.”

“I thought there wasn’t much for them to do.”

“Two of them are from a different company. Their First Sergeant had a couple additional things he wanted them to do. On my time. Found that out when I showed up.”

“How much longer will you be there?”

“Fucking midnight at this rate.”

“You wanna crash here?”

“Yes, but I can’t. I’ve got to be in by 0600 and I don’t have a change of clothes with me.” She looked at the troops. “I need to get back.”

“Call me when you get home.”

“Ant, it’ll be late.”
