“I’m glad things worked out with you,” Charlie said, handing her a stack of folders.

Antony came back in and grabbed the report off the printer. “I’m gonna run this copy over to Oliver. I’ll be right back,” he said, winking at Lesley and heading out the door. He missed the shadow of concern that fell over Lesley’s face.

“What’s up with that?” Charlie asked when the door closed.

“With what?”

“That look. What’s wrong?”

“Just some news I haven’t had the chance to tell him yet. I’m sure Oli is going to bring it up.”

Oliver was on the phone and greeted Antony with a wave and a gesture to take a seat. Within a minute, Oliver hung up and turned to him. “Change of command inspection coming up. They’ve known for months.”

“When is it?”

“Next week,” Oliver said, shaking his head.

“Lemme guess, they’ve done somewhere between jack and shit.”

“You’re a smart man, Ramos.”

Antony handed over the folder. “Last of the reports. You’ll get a copy to the Sergeant Major?”

“Yeah, not a problem,” Oliver said, flipping through it quickly.

Antony noticed a familiar looking paper on the corner of Oliver’s desk. “Orders? Yours?”

Oliver nodded. “Yep. Germany.”

“Lucky,” Antony said. “When you out of here?”

“Was a short notice. Original guy ended up on a medical out. I have to report in eight weeks.”

“Shit. Melanie gonna be able to go with you?”

“Yep. She’s working like mad at getting the house ready for market, but the agency we’re using said it’ll sell fast, especially with the guest house in the back.”

Antony was silent. Oliver looked at the man over the top of his glasses. “Les hadn’t told you.”

“No.”

“She doesn’t want to spook you,” Oliver said.

Of course. She’s always been fiercely independent. She also didn’t know what Antony had in mind. He smiled. “I know she doesn’t. Actually, this’ll help my plans out.”

Oliver smiled at his friend. “Well, not that you need it, but I approve of what you’re going to do.”

“I didn’t tell you what I’m doing.”

“You don’t need to.”

“How’s Oli?” Lesley asked as Antony walked back into the office. They’d gotten all the boxes and papers put away while he was gone, and she was about to head back to her office to check in.

“He’s fine, why?” Antony asked. He enjoyed the flash of curiosity on her face. Of course, she wondered, but she couldn’t say anything.

“Oh. No reason. Just hadn’t talked to him in a couple days,” she lied. She was a horrible liar. “I should get back and check on my searches.”

He walked her out to the lobby and quickly pulled her to him, kissing her soundly. “Coming over tonight?”
