She’d bet he worked from home. There was no way he went into an office daily looking like he had when he came to her place and she couldn’t picture any other job remotely off the top of her head unless it was sitting at a desk.

Then she told herself to wipe it from her mind. She didn’t think he’d come back for another haircut even if he was maintaining the beard.

She finished her shopping and drove to her lonely home.

Yes, a pet would be nice, but she wasn’t home enough for one. That wouldn’t be fair to any animal unless she got a fish and you couldn’t cuddle with a fish.

She was missing human touch more than she realized and wondered why it popped into her head after running into Brent again.

Brent finished with his groceries, buying more than he planned, then got the hell out of there.

He couldn’t remember the last time he not only struck up a conversation with a woman but enjoyed it.

He had to be losing his mind to do what he had, or maybe it was his mother getting in his head.

He’d bitten his tongue during dinner, did what he was told and answered as many questions as he could, then took off faster than the roadrunner with Wile E. Coyote on his tail and drove home.

When he passed the grocery store, he figured he might as well stop and get some food, then make a solid plan for the changes coming in his life.

He put his food and drinks away, stocking the fridge in his office on top of it, then walked around his place to see how he was going to handle a puppy.

Shit. Did he actually manage to get talked into this?

First things first, he picked up anything a puppy could chew or ruin. Then he wondered why he bothered because he wasn’t letting the dog out of his sight to get into mischief.

And his mother’s comment about him never being outside was a lie. He had to mow the lawn like he was going to do now.

He went into his garage to push the mower out and start it. Nothing but silence. He scratched his head and realized that yeah, it’d been two weeks already and the lawn looked it. He’d run out of gas and told himself he’d get it soon.

Soon didn’t happen, like so much more in his life.

In the past he’d go back in the house and put it off, but he had to stop that. If a dog was going to be running around in the back, the least he could do was have the lawn short enough so his newest addition didn’t get lost in the weeds.

Once he was back from the gas station, he got to work on the lawn maintenance. After he was done, he went into the house and grabbed some of the leftover potato salad to have with a sandwich.

He was sitting at his desk, checking for any alerts. No, he didn’t have to work seven days a week and didn’t always, but his programs ran on their own.

He pulled his keyboard forward and started to type in Vivian’s name. Just a normal internet search, nothing more.

Hannah’s homepage came up. He clicked on some information about all four girls and didn’t learn a lot.

He searched around some more but came up empty. No social media accounts other than the ones for her business.

When he went to do another search, a deeper one, he stopped himself.

No. Not only wasn’t it right, but there was also no reason for it. Just because he could find anything on anyone didn’t mean he should do it.

Vivian was the woman who cut his hair and was nice to him.

If she was the first woman he’d flirted with in years, he’d have to get over it.

His mother told him to start living again, and that was his first step. But relying on his computer to learn more about a person wasn’t living. That was hiding, he could almost hear his sister whispering in his ear.

Was he ready to do more? Probably not. He had a puppy to get ready for and would use his time to read more on that.
