Curious About Her

Aweek later Vivian was getting ready for her first appointment of the day. It was someone new. She liked new clients in the salon and chatting to find out how they heard about her. The more her name was spread around the better.

Hannah was already with her first client, Jenna rearranging product, Cat hadn’t come in yet. In her eyes, it couldn’t be more perfect.

It seemed lately the girls were all in her face wanting to know more about her relationship with Brent. She wasn’t used to this, not having been close with too many women. Nor having that serious of a relationship in years either.

She wasn’t sure what she had with Brent though. In her mind, it was serious, but she wasn’t positive if he felt the same way. It’s not like they were the type to talk about the future.

Especially after the tarot card reading almost a week and a half ago.

She hadn’t found anything else about her father online. Nothing about the documentary had been updated. She wasn’t sure if it was still on or not and wished she’d spent more time keeping up on him.

The problem was, she wanted to wipe it from her mind more often than not.

She’d gotten complacent and shouldn’t have.

“Vivian,” Jenna said, walking back. “Courtney Miller is here for her appointment.”

“Thanks,” she said, walking up front. “I’m Vivian. It’s so nice to meet you.”

“Thanks,” Courtney said.

“What are we doing today?”

“How about a cut. It’s been a while. Nothing major though.”

“That works,” she said. “Why don’t we wash it first.”

She led Courtney over to the sink and washed and conditioned her hair, then wrapped a towel around it.

When Courtney was at her station, she pulled the towel away and started to brush and untangle the locks. “Can I ask how you found out about me?”

“I host wine parties. I’m new to the area and one of my clients recently suggested I come to see you.”

Hmm. “Who?” she asked.

“Brenda Steele.”

Great, it was her neighbor. Talk about all the rotten luck. Brenda was nosy and always asking a million questions when Vivian was outside and couldn’t avoid the woman. She figured Brenda sent Courtney here on a fishing expedition knowing that so many stylists talk with their clients.

Brenda always tried to hint at how Vivian could afford to live in Paradise Place when she wasn’t even working when she moved. Then she found out she was a hairdresser. It was no one’s business she was left money from her grandparents and she didn’t feel the need to volunteer it.

She was friendly and not rude to Brenda, but she was private and keeping it that way.

“I appreciate the business. What brought you here? You said you’re new? Where are you from?”

“I’m from all over the place,” Courtney said. “I’ve spent the past ten years traveling to different wineries and consulting on various levels. Now I work in sales for a local wine distributor. I was sick of moving around so much and decided to just settle down when I saw this job. A friend of mine is from the area and she suggested I start my own side gig with the wine hosting parties. My bosses love it and it’s been enjoyable.”

“That sounds like fun,” she said.

“So tell me what you can about this area,” Courtney said.

“Sorry, there isn’t much I can say as well as others. I haven’t lived here that long either.”

“No?” Courtney said. “Where are you from?”

“I moved here from Chicago.”
