“Did you want to go anywhere together? I get the feeling you don’t take much time off of work,” she said.

“I don’t. I hardly ever do. Rob forced me more than anything, but it’s not like we did much more than long weekends here and there. He worked a lot too. What about you?”

“It’s been a long time since I’ve taken a vacation. I consider the fact that when I moved here I wasn’t working for almost two months while I did things in the house and looked for a job. That was enough time off.”

“Maybe we can look at going away for a long weekend, if you’re up for it. My mother can watch Sammie.”

“I can watch Sammie,” his mother said when she walked out of the kitchen having heard their conversation when they came in the door. “Where are you going?”

“No clue,” Brent said. “You have a bad habit of picking up in the middle of when others are talking.”

Kelly laughed and kissed them both on the cheek, then reached for the pies in Vivian’s hand that she’d made last night. “These look wonderful. I don’t mind baking but pies have never been my thing.” She turned to her son. “And when you talk about me of course I’m going to jump into the conversation.”

“Fine,” he said. “I know better than to argue with you. Vivian and I were talking about how we never take any time off. Maybe we’ll take a long weekend at some point.”

“Take a full week. We can handle Sammie. We’ll probably spoil her more than you do,” Kelly said to Brent.

“Not sure that is possible,” she said. “Brent babies her, but he doesn’t want anyone to know that.”

“Sounds like Vivian is telling your secrets,” Tyler said when they walked into the living room. “Is that apple pie? Do you have ice cream with it?”

“We forgot the ice cream,” she said. She knew there was something she couldn’t remember when she was packing up.

“No problem,” Brent said. “We can run to the store for it. I’m sure my mother needs something else. She always does.”

“Actually,” Kelly said. “Since you’re going, let me get my list.”

He looked at her with a big grin on his face. “Told you.”

Two Misfits

Brent didn’t know what was going on with Vivian.

She’d said she wasn’t nervous and he did believe her. He believed that it was a long time since she’d spent time with family for a holiday.

Hell, if he’d had his way, he would have gotten out of plenty of holidays with his family too, but they always sucked him back in when he wanted to be spun out and left alone.

“Why were you in such a hurry to run out again?” she asked when they were in his SUV.

“I love my family and my parents, but they are going to be on our case today.”

“About what?” she asked.

“We’ve been dating a few months. They are going to want to know how things are going. What our plans are. Now she caught us in the vacation talk.”

“That’s your fault,” she said, laughing.

“True. I don’t think when I’m talking.”

“Because you aren’t used to talking to too many people.”

“Very true,” he said.

They parked at the store not that far from his parents and got out. “It’s busier than I’d thought it’d be.”

“It’s early yet,” he said. It was barely eleven. “There are probably plenty here doing the same as us. Picking up one or two things they forgot. Let’s get a small basket and we can get in and out fast.”
