Addison took all the medication back and stuck it in the bag. “A lot of people feel the same way.”

She knew it was a lie. There were just as many people out there who came in to only get some kind of prescription. It was sad but nothing she could do about it.

She didn’t write the scripts; she filled them.

“If you don’t have any other questions, then I hope you feel better. Our number is on the papers and you can call and talk to anyone in the department if you do think of something though. I know Google is a great fall back and it can be wonderful, but it’s also full of misinformation. Please don’t hesitate to call for anything.”

“Thanks.”

She stood up and walked out of the room, then turned to the right at the same time her phone went off. She pulled it out of the pocket of her white lab coat to look at it and bumped right into someone. “I’m so sorry,” she said, looking up and right in Marcus Reid’s blue eyes.

His hand came out and grabbed her shoulder to steady her. “I was going to say that,” he said.

The hand not on her arm was holding his phone and she got the feeling he was doing the same thing she was. “These stupid things,” she said. “I feel like it’s part of my anatomy that I can’t get away from.”

He smiled at her, his teeth white and straight and it wasn’t just her hand that was getting clammy, but her heart was racing and her mouth felt dry.

She was normally pretty chill and laid back around men, but something about Marcus always set her body into overdrive.

“I know the feeling, Addison,” he said.

She didn’t know he knew her name. She smiled at him. “I’m impressed.”

“Why is that?” he asked, his hand dropping down and him taking a step back.

“With everyone that works here, you know my name. It’s easier to know yours, but I’m not normally on the floor like a nurse would be.”

“You’re pretty noticeable,” he said.

“I might say the same, Dr. Reid.”

“Marcus,” he said. Then leaned in. “Just Marcus will do. Don’t add ‘The Man’ to it.”

Her face flushed. She had no clue he was aware of that. “It’s horrible, isn’t it?”

“You’re telling me,” he said. His phone went off again, but this time it was a call. She glanced down and noticed it was his office calling even though it was just about seven. “Sorry, I’ve got to take this. Nice to see you and sorry to bump into you.”

“The same,” she said, moving away.

“What did he say?” Claire asked her when she was passing by the nurse’s station.

“Don’t you have patients to see?”

“No,” Claire said. “My shift is ending in two minutes. I’m waiting for my replacement. But I couldn’t help but notice you talking to Marcus. What did he say to you?”

“Not much,” she said. There was no way she was telling Claire that Marcus knew about that nickname, nor was she going to explain the brief conversation.

“It looked like more than an apology for bumping into each other.”

Which meant Claire had seen the whole thing.

“Not much more than that,” she lied. She didn’t need Claire, or anyone else for that matter, asking her questions.

She’d never told anyone that she had a crush on Marcus. She felt like a fool having one at thirty-one years old. But she was smart enough to know what it was.

There were a lot of women here who looked at Dr. Reid the same way she did and she hated to be lumped into any group like that.

Keeping to herself had made life much easier, she’d learned.
