I walk to the kitchen door and open it, looking out onto a back deck that seems to connect this townhouse with the ones on either side.

“Hi there,” I say.

“Hi. I’m Char.”

“Haven,” I say, holding out my hand. The woman takes it and gives me a firm handshake, even as her eyes dodge mine. A breeze pushes in through the doorway, and the rich scent of cherries wafts into the house.Omega.

“You’re one of the other… other…?”

“Omegas, yes,” Char says softly. “I got here a few days ago. You?”

“Yesterday. Well, I haven’t been to sleep yet, but we finished our filming, and now the sun’s coming up, so I guess it was yesterday? It’s confusing. You wanna come in?”

Char hesitates. She still won’t meet my eye, but I can see her posture stiffening.

“Or I could come out?”

She relaxes slightly. “Sure. We have some chairs on our part of the deck, if you want.”

“Sounds good.” I drop the rest of my sandwich back on the plate and follow Char outside, shutting the door behind me.

“I didn’t even know there was a deck back here until you knocked,” I say to Char’s back.

She glances back at me over her shoulder. “Really? The first thing I did was figure out all the exits. Though I guess that says something about me.”

“Honestly, considering the situation, I think you’re just smarter than me.”

Char smiles, ducking her head at my compliment. We reach the chairs, and Char takes one in the corner of the deck, where she can see all three townhouse doors. I sit opposite her, my back to everything. I’m guessing Char needs to keep a lookout more than I do.

“Did they take your phone?”

Char chuckles, “Of course.”

“Mine too. It feels weird, not having it. I keep looking for it and then remembering it’s gone, you know?”

Char lifts her hand to her mouth and takes a small nibble on her thumbnail. Her hair brushes back, revealing a long scar running down the left side of her face. The sight doesn’t surprise me too much; it was clear she was trying to hide something with her hair. But I can’t help but wonder how she got the scar in the first place. Was it an accident? Did someone hurt her?

I avert my eyes before she can catch me looking. I don’t want her to think I’m staring.

“Anyone living with you yet?” I ask her.

Char nods, ducking her head again.

“A feral?”

“Yeah. Supposed to help me with my heat. He doesn’t like me, though.”

“I’m sure that’s not true. You’re an omega, he’s an alpha. What’s not to like?”

“Just because we’re compatible doesn’t mean we’re… compatible,” Char replies.

“I know,” I say with a sigh. “I feel the same way. I might smell good to an alpha, but then they look at me, you know?”

Char shakes her head. “You look fine to me.”

“Well you look fine to me,” I say with a smile. I cock my head at her doorway behind me. I lean forward and whisper, “What does your alpha smell like?”

Char glances at the doorway, but must not see anything, because she leans in and whispers, “Sandalwood.”
